Coconut Shell Primer- Filipino Desperation Ammo WWII

During WWII the Filipino resistance was desperate for munitions (It least one resistance groups used this method)and so took brass curtain prods and filed them down for the bullet and took the powder from mines (captured not from mine fields) and mixed it with saw dust to come up with a usable gun powder. Even though powder from mines was a lighting fast explosive the right mix of saw dust slowed the reaction causing it to react like a propellant instead of a very fast burning explosive (the powder from the mine blew up 5 guns before they got it right) but the primer was the amazing part coconut shell carbon mixed with sulfur. Reported success of discharges with this primer 8 to 9 times out of 10. They did not give the proportions or the process but it was most probably mixed into a past and the primer was rebuilt and dried. In an emergency it would pay to experiment with other more available carbon substitutes. It would appear that denser products like extremely dense woody products carbonized (The product of choice is heated and turned into a black carbon like charcoal in a near enclosed environment then sifted through a aluminum screen wire into a fine powder . Grinding to a dust might be necessary after cooking. A short piece of black gas pipe with two dead end caps would make an air tight cooking chamber). In an emergency given that coconuts are not relay available here in the USA a substitute product should be sought like black walnut shells, peach or plumb pits or other nut shells or dense wood products like lilac wood or Iron wood would seam to be best to experiment with first as they are such a dense wood product and when carbonized should offer longer carbon chains. It is unknown if any other product would work except coconut shells Though not in the formula for the coconut shell primer an additive that is in most modern primers is a small percentage of finely ground glass 8 to 12% which causes added friction when the primer is struck by the firing pin. Glass could be most useful and offer a near 100% ignitable primer. Dry small amounts of experimental product on paper  no bigger than a match head and use light hammer strikes to test results. R&D needed.  Richard W Norman

Magnesium Shotgun Shell Dragons Breath

While promoting my book at a gun show last year and disusing alternatives to shotgun shells one man was very much annoyed that I did not know how to make a magnesium shotgun shell called Dragons Breath . Returning home it was looked up on the internet. To buy such a shell is about $5 each and it shoots out a brilliant white light for about 100 feet which lasts 3 seconds. I suppose that if you were in that stream that you would have a very bad experience. The question for the use of such a pyrotechnic device in a combat situation would be very limited. Range under 90 foot other wise it would have little effect on the target. Night time use would also be limited for when you fired the gun you would be an instant target. Useful application as a flair poor as the 3 seconds visible light could be missed by searchers.
WWII flame throwers had a range of from 165 to 200 ft from the gunner. The fuel generally lasted 12 seconds so the device was used in short bursts. So 4 magnesium shot shells would have the time duration of a WWII flame thrower. A magnesium shot shell would probably only have an affect on one target where a WWII flame thrower would have an effect on multiple targets at the same time. The magnesium shotgun shell is said not to hurt the  shot gun barrel but causes very bad fowling
I think the real drawbacks of the magnesium shot shell is range, visibility or drawing fire, limited target application, as well as specific application or when to, or not to, use the device. But if it could be applied under the right conditions it could be a most frightening, unsettling, fearsome weapon. Every weapon has its shortcomings. This one just has more than its share if it was used outside its pretty pyrotechnics.
Slugs and buckshot would be a better choice or even bird shot for self defense as they would offer a grater range rather than a magnesium shotgun shell. All your opponent would need to do would be distance himself back further than 100 ft. Best application in a war of a magnesium shotgun shell Dragons Breath would be tight close quarters combat situations in an urban environment.

Defeat the Unexpected

Sometimes we are taken off guard and many times it is because we did not think about the varied situations we will be facing or the possible responses and options available to us. This has proven troublesome to some of us when we look back and say "I should have known". This statement suggests something more than intuitiveness, foresight, or a sixth sense as some will call it. It only suggests that we did not consider our options and the alternatives. God will inspire the mind but such require that we look for options available to us and consider the problem facing us, as well as alternative problems that may come along. WWII General Gorge S Patton said it perhaps the best with fewer words than I had just used "Defeat the unexpected by expecting it". It douse not mater if it is business or war Look at the options and put your self in the shoos of your opponent and consider his options  Richard W Norman
