Defeating Failure

Gun Holsters For Under $8

One of the friendlier places is a sporting goods store is usually the gun shop But today I went to a large store called Scheels. I expressed to 2 managers and 3 or 4 sales clerks that I was a gun book author and wanted to write about an inexpensive holster from the BB and paint ball department that could be used with hand guns as part of my blog posts for the week. I brought my daughter so I could try each gun and tell her if the fit was good fair or acceptable or small or too small. Two sales clerks offered a few minutes of half heated service and and then dumped me. The rest withheld any help at all. People usually cant weight to have a writer come in and give an evaluation of their store or service in print. Millions are spent on advertising each year but perhaps the best commercial is the boots on the floor. Scheels service today was poor. I really do not like the assembly line feel of their customer service.

The purpose of this blog is to give you information on useful products you can use to cut your  expenditures and stretch your budget. The other purpose is to give you information on making gun stuff that you may no longer be able to buy some day.
Having a gun is only half of the equation. Having a holster so you can present the gun is the other half. As people are rushing into the gun market some spending beyond their ability and yet not knowing that if guns are band webbing (holsters and clip holders) will be banned as well, as they were in England and Australia

Crosman Holster

On a low budget having some type of holster is better than no holster at all. Bellow in the photo this gun fits, but the gun is small. This is a better than nothing holster. Some well placed stitching with black carpet thread would move the gun back a bit and the holster would be more  snug to the gun and more functional but it is not bad the way it is but is a little sloppy  In a stress situation a holster of any type would be invaluable. The Velcro on the clip pouch is not of the highest quality so you might try to get the wife to replace it but you would need a curved carpet needle. Also the quick release black steel button is handy but here to not of the highest quality and a little light for my taste. (The Velcro on the clip holder and button of a better type would have only cost Crosman a few extra pennies and given them a very competitive product. Somtimes I do not understand businessmen. The Velcro used on the belt strap seemed to be a much better type.) If you can afford it, a better holster for a smaller gun like this one would be better. Even a better holster for a larger gun would be better but if you are working on a Coca-cola pocket book this holster would fit the bill and not brake the bank and would be a million times better than nothing. This holster will fit on the belt from your pants and so requires no additional purchases on your part. Some holster companies offer a clip on holster and they are handy but if you are on the move they can also clip off. Also if someone grabs the grip of the gun the clip on holster will give them not only the gun but the holster will go with them as well. This holster has a Velcro belt strap with a secondary Velcro crossing strap which seems to be a better hold than a clip on holster.
Crosman Holster --Usable for a smaller gun if on a low budget, but better for a mid to larger framed gun. A 1911 will stick out about 1/2 inch of the end of this holster. If using a revolver snub nosed revolvers up to 4 inches would probably be the best fit for this gun holster. Longer barreled revolvers would also extend past the end as well
  Guns I was able to try this holster on;
 Beretta Nano Fit exceptionable
Springfield XDM  Fit exceptionable
Kahr CW9  Fits Small but OK
Taurus 709 Fits Gun small (probably like the photo above when you see this description)
Kahr P40 Fits Gun small
CW45 Fit well
Walter P 22 Fits Gun small
Springfield 1911 22 Cal  Fits good but the barrel  extends 1/2 inch
Colt 1911 22 Cal              "    "      "      "    "         "         "     "
Sig Sauer  22 Cal Mosquito  Fits Good
Sig Sauer 1911 Fit perfect
CZ P07  Fit perfect
CW4D Compact Fit fair but a little small but not terrible
Kahr PM40  small

NOTE I wish I could have given you a more detailed report and a Scheels sales clerk would have given me 15 or 20 minutes I probably only held each gun  above for less than 30 seconds each. Some near small guns were wider than others and even though the overall appearance for size was the same they fit considerably better than other guns in this holster. One white shirt store manager at Scheels was noticeably disturbed that I was not using a holster from a more expensive holster line for my description in fact his disdain verged on the borders of insulting. He then became insulting and began to talk to me like a 2 year old and I had enough of Scheels for the day. If he treated other customers like that no one would ever know but to treat one like that-- that was going to go home and wright about it verges on the realm of ---well you know!

This Crosman woven nylon holster is made the same way as any good gun holster and was found in the paint ball and toy section of the sporting goods store. Surprisingly it is only a fraction of the price of a gun specific holster and will accommodate a number of different brands of guns. $7.99. Many gun holsters are as much as $30 ---$40 to $50. The packaging above will allow you to open it, do not remove the staples, un-tuck the plastic corners and try your gun if it does not work  repackage it and get a refund and spend the extra money on a holster to fit your gun.
PS pawn shops and gun shops may well have a used holster it could not hurt to do a little checking. But what ever you do in an emergency like a earthquake or a natural disaster you need a holster for home defense even if it is home made out of denim and Velcro.   Richard W Norman

Gods Help

Can I ask God to fight my battles for me when I have brains, strength and arm sufficient to weld the sword in defense of justice and truth in the day of work or if needed battle?  Preposterous! We are obliged to use all we have and then we can ask for his help. With all our efforts expended God has said he will move the very heavens for our good. Richard W Norman

A Bad Career Politician

A bad career politician is like a man with a cold. He keeps telling the boss how much he is needed around the office but in the end he infects the rest of the office with his sickness. A bad career politician is like a man with a cold, he should be sent home and we all pray for his recovery and continued health but in the politicians case at another line of work. Richard W Norman

Ammo Reloading Cheap Skate

Front turret press, Tall press with read handle 12 gauge  shot gun press, back left tan powder scale. Rack on back wall different calibers of replaceable turrets with different calibers

Low budget reloading--- Gun shops are wonderful places as the average gun owner is a patriotic law abiding individual with a fierce loyalty of God and country. Gun shop owners are an interesting breed who also feels for the future of the country but yet they also are obligated to pay for the bottom line rent, lights etc. to keep the shop open so we can enjoy it. My favorite Gun shop is not open any more Starkey’s gun shop in El Paso Texas. Mr. Starkey had a very successful shop but it was nothing fancy. He closed because he wanted to retire not because he went broke. The two employees behind the counter were John and Travis and were friendly and honest. The gun shop could have used a new coat of paint but it was well stocked and you always got good information and I must say they always told me what the least expensive reloading stuff I could buy and as a family man on a low budget it made a difference. Mr. Starkey would take in used reloading equipment in trade form people who wanted to upgrade and for someone on my budget at the time it was a treasure trove of things that I could add to my reloading supplies at a cut price. They also pointed out the old dogs (useless or unreliable equipment) that were not reliable or as good and suggest I do not buy them. The amount of money I spent at Starkey’s was not as much as others might have spent but they always gave me a good value for a good price and they treated their customers like an old friend. I do not drink coffee but, Mr. Starkey always had on a fresh pot, and a folding table and chairs and on any given day you could fall into a good conversation on reloading and shooting or political problems of the time or gun repair problems they had solved. I made it a point to stop by once a week to see what he had taken in in trade. People would stop by and visit and on an occasion or two when the wife needed me she would call the shop as she knew if I was late coming home after work she could probably find me there. The entrance to Mr. Starkey’s office was behind the end counter and had no door and here again you could walk back and see him any time, and here too it was a gathering place for friendly people.
Some other Guns shops did not want to sell reloading equipment as the markup on ammo had such a profit margin that they did not want to louse the money. I had a chance to watch a video today which I will not name but it involved reloading and the man was a gun shop owner and he was pricing high dollar items and expensive brass and said that each shell casing cost about .32 cents to .50 cents a reload. You do not have to spend the kind of money that some loading companies charge for reloading supplies, and you do not need all the fancy stuff they advertise. All you need is this short list 1)a hand held case trimmer for rifle from initially $15 and the parts are reusable and other cases will use some of the same parts so that would be an additional $5 for each different caliber case (From Lee). 2) You generally do not have to trim pistol cases and you will need 3) powder dippers (or for a little more a machine to throw powder for $32 and a 4) loading press as little as $40, 5) powder $35 and 6)loading dyes $40 and 7) loading information a loading book about $30. Save your brass each time you shoot and when you are ready to reload there is no investment, reload it. So for new stuff about $120 or for a little more you can get a kit with extra stuff in it to make loading easier.
Reloading costs and procedures--If you decide to reload with copper jacketed bullets you can generally do it for a savings of 50% of store costs for new ammo. By casting my own bullets I can reload rifle or pistol for pennies. My own cast bullets is $20 for a 5 gal bucket of wheel weights making it a fraction of a cent a bullet for cost. I show how to harden wheel weights on a post on this blog posted 7/13/12 titled Hardening Cast Bullets. This is performed by heating the cast bullet and quenching it in water. I also show a 9 part bullet casting seminar that I put on U-Tube a few years ago but now is on this blog in its entirety beginning on 8/8/12 and ending 8/18/12. Primer 3 cents, gas checks cost 1.5 cents each (but are optional depending on whether the bullet mold has a place for a gas check or not, or whether you want to push the bullet a little slower and not use one), powder cost 2 cents. A 30/06 or 308 loaded cartridge is only 7 to 10 cents. I bought pulled military powder a while  back cheep. On the high end rifle $2 for 20  bullets and 5 ½ cents for non-gas checked pistol or $2.25 for a box of 50 pistol bullets.

Politicians

There are two types of politicians. The rarest politician is one that has the highest morals and standards. These must be kept at all costs! The most common sort of politicians wants you to think they have high standards and morals but have none. These must be thrown out at all cost!!! Acceptance of political corruption only spawns political corruption. In a past day when society demanded the highest Morales and standards of the men leading this country we had a better class of men and women making far better decisions as our leaders. A man or woman who cannot be true to the highest standards and morals of the covenants of marriage and has no regard for their family cannot be expected to have any real feelings for our families. They shell not run for office, should be our watch cry! We do not want them!!! We dare not consider them! Those wanting to legalize prostitution will offer our children nothing less than being enslaved by passion, disease, and broken homes. Young women will be pressed into sexual slavery and servitude. Is that the America we want for our posterity?   Richard W Norman

Bench Block for Free

The bench blocks above were  made by me years ago the one on the left was a class project (to buy one depending on the company that made it is from $30 to $80)the one center and to the right were from old timer blueprints, also made by me. The one far left is useful in taking things apart; it allows you to drive out pins of varying sizes. The other two have movable claws which are useful in holding and making small parts. For the most part the above blocks are more than you would ever need. The one to the left is and has been very usable for gun Dis-assembly. Actually the same bench block is available in plastic for $20 to $40 and they very in shape and design which douse not matter but all work the same way.
All you need is a piece of synthetic decking. This was a free sample from the lumber yard.  The wood imprint on the other side was turned down.
The part is laid out for where you want the "V" grove I put mine to the side. The first cut in the center was made to the desired depth  With the saw cutting as you normally wood make the out side lines about 3/32 deep and then tilt the hacksaw as you see above and aim for the  end of the center cut, do the same on the other side.
The largest hole in the decking is 3/4 inch. This hole was probably way larger than I would ever need and it was made with a wood drill bit the other holes were made with regular drill bits. Different sized bits were chosen with no particular preference except the one in the center of the V was 1/2 inch and should be the largest drill bit you have if you do not have a 1/2 inch bit. Take a few minutes and lay out the drill points with some sort of accuracy and order and it will be an attractive but very usable addition to your tool box. This is a 10 to 15 minute project that can save you a few bucks. It is a very durable soft but tough anvil. It is very usable. It is safer to use on a gun then the bench block on the left above and cost nothing other than a little of your time. Make one hole with the largest drill bit you have on the flat surface even if you use the 1/2 inch bit twice  and scatter the holes so there is a small hole near a large one and never two large holes together. I finished the "V" grove with a file.
Never take a working functioning gun apart any further than to  clean it. Liquid spray gun cleaners are most useful for cleaning complicated parts. Brake parts cleaner at one time was a very useful product in tell they started putting chlorine in it.
P.S. While picking up your free piece of decking the free deep nap long fiber carpet samples at the lumber yard are very useful for washing you auto upholstery  Richard W. Norman  the Junk-Ologist

The Dumbest Smart People

Political comparisons the dumbest smart people you will ever meat – About 2000 years ago a severe political situation arose in nation of Jerusalem. Two kings seeking for power both without the knowledge of the other asked the Romans to assist them in over throwing the other king- Roam wrote back to both kings and agreed to help. Both kings stood still thinking that they were being assisted, but  in the end they both were out of a job and Rome was in control.
Those wanting us to move toward socialism would do well to look at a few history books—the killing fields—the death camps—the lost homes—destroyed families—the loss of freedom. Those wanting socialism are too stupid to look at the past, consumed with looking at the present in hopes of money, positions, power, or just a free lunch. Such people are without feeling, thinking somehow they will be in charge. It is interesting to note that from their perspective they are so cold hearted as to believe that the killing fields—the death camps—the lost homes—destroyed families-- the attack on the church—the loss of freedom will affect everyone but them. If they stopped to read a few history books they would realize that they will be dead in a short time after they succeed, killed at the hand of those they helped to overthrow our government
If Hitler’s Germany happened here hopefully we as a people would be smart enough to know we must resist. This resistance would result in the extermination of those who started the mess. If the socialists happened to win however the vast majority of their leaders would be exterminated by those they helped get them in to power. Yes that is true of any socialist takeover! A socialist is indeed one of the dumbest smart people you will ever meet. Is that what you call a lose-lose situation, or an oxymoron? A better world has always been offered by those who have not sought for personal aggrandizement, or position. Perhaps it is time we start looking for those types of people to run our government again.   Richard W Norman

Good is Bad and Bad is Good. What?

When society is good it will censor the bad and uphold the right. Those so censored are offended of course and settle into a plan to change public opinion. When society moves toward being bad, or generally accepts what was unacceptable a short time before society will soon judge that it is good to be bad. Another word the unaccepted precepts of a generation before is now accepted as good. Or it is good to be bad. With this change if the press becomes involved it will try to make those who still believe in the good precepts of the past think that they are outnumbered and that the bad is now accepted as good. When this bad group begins to organize and spread its new morality there is generally an allusion that the good are outnumbered. If the government becomes involved it passes laws to silence those who would speak out to restore morality. With the public believing that they are outnumbered and the press supporting the change the government makes, it becomes illegal to speak openly and enables lawsuits to silence those who would speak. When the bad solidify the power of their position they can now reverse the roles and speak openly to persecute those who at one time were considered good. The Bible prophesied of the day when evil would be called good and good evil. We need to remember just because the world says good is bad, and bad is good-- it never has-- and never will make it so.    Richard W Norman

Let Freedom Ring June 28 2011 Kitty Werthmann

Another internet censored video Since it was bumped off the internet I now have a transcript.
By Kitty Werthmann
"What I am about to tell you is something you've probably never heard or will ever read in history books.
I believe that I am an eyewitness to history. I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We elected him by a landslide - 98% of the vote.. I've never read that in any American publications. Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his thanks and took Austria by force.
In 1938, Austria was in deep Depression. Nearly one-third of our workforce was unemployed. We had 25% inflation and 25% bank loan interest rates.
Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young people were going from house to house begging for food.. Not that they didn't want to work; there simply weren't any jobs. My mother was a Christian woman and believed in helping people in nee.. Every day we cooked a big kettle of sou and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people - about 30 daily.

The Communist Party and the National Socialist Party were fighting each other. Blocks and blocks of cities like Vienna, Linz, and Graz were destroyed. The people became desperate and petitioned the government to let them decide what kind what kind of government they wanted.

We looked to our neighbor on the north, Germany, where Hitler had been in power since 1933. We had been told that they didn't have unemployment or crime, and they had a high standard of living. Nothing was ever said about persecution of any group -- Jewish or otherwise. We were led to believe that everyone was happy. We wanted the same way of life in Austria. We were promised that a vote for Hitler would mean the end of unemployment and help for the family. Hitler also said that businesses would be assisted, and farmers would get their farms back. Ninety-eight percent of the population voted to annex Austria to Germany and have Hitler for our ruler.

We were overjoyed, and for three days we danced in the streets and had candlelight parades. The new government opened up big field kitchens and everyone was fed.

After the election, German officials were appointed, and like a miracle, we suddenly had law and order. Tree or four weeks later, everyone was employed. The government made sure that a lot of work was created through the Public Work Service.

Hitler decided we should have equal rights for women. Before this, it was a custom that married Austrian women did not work outside the home. An able-bodied husband would be looked down on if he couldn't support his family. Many women in the teaching profession were elated that they could retain the jobs they previously had been required to give up for marriage.

Hitler Targets Education- Eliminates Religious Instruction for Children:

Our education was nationalized. I attended a very good public school. The population was predominantly Catholic, so we had religion in our schools. The day we elected Hitler (March 13, 1938), I walked into my schoolroom to find the crucifix replaced by Hitler's picture hanging next to a Nazi flag. Our teacher, a very devout woman, stood up and told the class we wouldn't pray or have religion anymore. Instead, we sang "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles," and had physical education.

Sunday became National Youth Day with compulsory attendance. Parents were not pleased about the sudden change in curriculum. They were told that if they did not send us, they would receive a stiff letter of warning the first time. The second time they would be fined the equivalent of $300, and the third time they would be subject to jail. The first two hours consisted of political indoctrination. The rest of the day we had sports. As time went along, we loved it.. Oh, we had so much fun and got our sports equipment free. We would go home and gleefully tell our parents about the wonderful time we had.

My mother was very unhappy. When the next term started, she took me out of public school and put me in a convent. I told her she couldn't do that and she told me that someday when I grew up, I would be grateful. There was a very good curriculum, but hardly any fun - no sports, and no political indoctrination. I hated it at first but felt I could tolerate it. Every once in a while, on holidays, I went home. I would go back to my old friends and ask what was going on and what htey were doing. Their loose lifestyle was very alarming to me. They lived without religion. By that time unwed mothers were glorified for having a baby for Hitler. It seemed strange to me that our society changed so suddenly. As time went along, I realized what a great deed my mother did so that I wasn't exposed to that kind of humanistic philosophy.

Equal Rights Hits Home:
In 1939, the war started and a food bank was established. All food was rationed and could only be purchased using food stamps. At the same time, a full-employment law was passed which meant if you didn't work, you didn't get a ration card, and if you didn't have a card, you starved to death. Women who stayed home to raise their families didn't have any marketable skills and often had to take jobs mor suited for men.

Soon after this, the draft was implemented. It was compulsory for young people, male and female, to give one year to the labor corps. During the day, the girls worked on the farms, and at night they returned to their barracks for military training just like the boys, They were trained to be anti-aircraft gunners and participated in the signal corps. After the labor corps, they were not discharged but were used in the front lines. When I go back to Austria to visit my family and friends, most of these women are emotional cripples because they just were not equipped to handle the horrors of combat. Three months before I turned 18, I was severely injured in an air raid attack. I nearly had a leg amputated, so I was spared having to go into the labor corps and into military service.

Hitler Restructured The Family Through Daycare:

When the mothers had to go out into the work force, the government immediately established child care centers. You could take your children ages 4 weeks to school age and leave them there around-the-clock, 7 days a week, under the total care of the government. The state raised a whole generation of children.. There were no motherly women to take care of the children, just people highly trained in child psychology. By this time, no one talked about equal rights. We knew we had been had.

Health Care and Small Business Suffer Under Government Controls:
Before Hitler, we had very good medical care. Many American doctors trained at the University of Vienna. After Hitler, health care was socialized, free for everyone. Doctors were salaried by the government. The problem was, since it was free, the people were going to the doctors for everything. When the good doctor arrived at his office at 8 a.m., 40 people were already waiting and, at the same time, the hospitals were full. If you needed elective surgery, you had to wait a year or two for your turn. There was no money for research as it was poured into socialized medicine. Research at the medical schools literally stopped, so the best doctors left Austria and emigrated to other countries.

As for healthcare, our tax rates went up to 80% of our income. Newlyweds immediately received a $1,000 loan from the government to establish a household. We had big programs for families. All day care and education were free. High schools were taken over by the government and college tuition was subsidized. Everyone was entitled to free handouts, such as food stamps, clothing, and housing.

We had another agency designed to monitor business. My brother-in-law owned a restaurant that had square tables. Government officials told him he had to replace them with round tables because people might bump themselves on the corners. Then they said he had to have additional bathroom facilities. It was just a small dairy business with a snack bar. He couldn't meet all the demands. Soon, he went out of business. If the government owned the large businesses and not many small ones existed, it could be in control.

We had consumer protection. We were told how to shop and what to buy. Free enterprise was essentially abolished. We had a planning agency specially designed for farmers. The agents would go to the farms, count the live-stock, then tell the farmers what to produce, and how to produce it.

"Mercy Killing" Redefined:

In 1944, I was a student teacher in a small village in the Alps. The villagers were surrounded by mountain passes which, in the winter, were closed off with snow, causing people to be isolated. So people intermarried and offspring were sometimes retarded.

When I arrived, I was told there were 15 mentally retarded adults, but they were all useful and did good manual work. I knew one, named Vincent, very well. He was a janitor of the school. One day I looked out the window and saw Vincent and others getting into a van. I asked my superior where they were going. She said to an institution where the State Health Department would teach them a trade, and to read and write. The families were required to sign papers with a little clause that they could not visit for 6 months. They were told visits would interfere with the program and might cause homesickness.

As time passed, letters started to dribble back saying these people died a natural, merciful death. The villagers were not fooled. We suspected what was happening. Those people left in excellent physical health and all died within 6 months. We called this euthanasia.

The Final Steps _ Gun Laws:

Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long afterwards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them , so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.

No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the government was taken away. We knew many people who were arrested, not only Jews, but also priests and ministers who spoke up.

Totalitarianism didn't come quickly, it took 5 years from 1938 until 1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria. Had it happened overnight, my countrymen would have fought to the last breath. Instead, we had creeping gradualism. Now our only weapons were broom handles. The whole idea sounds almost unbelievable that the state, little by little eroded our freedom.

After World War II, Russian troops occupied Austria. Women were raped, preteen to elderly. The press never wrote about this either. When the Soviets left in 1955, they took everything that they could, dismantling whole factories in the process. They sawed down whole orchards of fruit, and what they couldn't destroy, they burned. We called it The Burned Earth. Most of the population barricaded themselves in their houses. Women hid in their cellars for 6 weeks as the troops mobilized. Those who couldn't, paid the price. There is a monument in Vienna today, dedicated to those women who were massacred by the Russians. This is an eye witness account.
"It's true..those of us who sailed past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom and opportunity.
