Outside skin of the melting pot-- Before proceeding the tin snips below are about 25 years old and used around the house. A pair of tin snips will last about 6 months in the hands of an air conditioner duct man for day to day use. A new set in the hands of someone who douse not know how to use them will not last 6 minutes. They were loaned to a neighbor recently and one of them is nearly useless. Adding to the list of things never to loan--- your wife, your car, and your tin snips. These would have probably lasted me the rest of my life. Hold the cutting edges square with the cut and never let the cutting edges turn so the metal jams in between the jaws. The sides of the casting pot will come from a fender from a car repair from my daughters car and the front cover will come from a fender given to me by Ken's Body Shop as my first fender was not enough to finish the job.

Tin snips come in right and left hand and straight cut type. To make long cuts a 1/2 inch strip is cut alternating betweenthe snips one cutting one side and the other cutting the other. |

My home made metal brake makes very nice sharp corners for such a project. Angle iron would have been preferable for the top clamp leaf, But I used what I could get my hands on to build the metal brake. Note the vice grips and the outside wings saved me from building difficult to make locking handles. Making things as simple and functional as you can is always a grate idea. The vice grips only need a light pressure. |

The first bend was the back right hand corner the next was after careful measurement in the back left hand corner and finally the front bends were finished |

In the background are files, 99% were dollar swap meat junk box files , and pawn shop wonders for $1 each The handles were salvaged from bad screw drivers for 25 cents each. |

The outer skin was made longer than the pot it tall, this allowed for welding small spots and using a grinder to level the metal where the next weld would be making a uniform edge on the top and bottom of the pot.Click to view next post
A Blog has the ability to up date material and even though time has passed and this is an old post I noticed that a lot of people will only view one page and move on. So it seemed practical to place a photo of the finished product on each post.
