No generation gap

We have arrived at a time where the generation gap is narrowing as never before. One college professor took an old TV series called, “Leave it to Beaver”, and copied some clips to show to his students. The professor expected the walls to shake with laughter as he showed families in settings far different than we are used to today. At the close of the video the room was silent the professor asked what the class thought. On girl said how much she would like life to be like that today and the class agreed. In essence the responses went like this one kid said she would give anything to lay in the sun in the grass in her front yard and study her homework and not fear to be accosted or shot. Another kid said, “oh that I could have dinner with my family like that,” another, “Oh to be able to take a walk in the evening without fear.” The kids went on and on. Selling good at this time of depravity to this generation may not be as much of a hard sell as we might think. True pied-pipers of the present need to play a song of the values of the past and we may well find our children willingly dancing to the music. Richard W Norman

Corrosive Primers and Gun Cair

Military surplus ammo-- Just a beef explanation on corrosive primers. Long ago one of the first primers was the old mercury base primer or some call them mercuric primers These had a salt, a mercuric salt that would corrode the gun barrel of your gun even when it was cleaned very well. This required a special cleaning solvent called by the soldiers as Mothers Milk. Primers today are not made with corrosive salts however many surplus types of ammo's that have and are coming into the country over the years were made before the new primers and are the old mercuric primers. If you inherit Great Grand dads old shooting stuff you may find stockpiles of bullets made before the new primer replacements were available. Some of this stuff even shows up at the local gun show, being passed from shooter to shooter and never used. First, it is good stuff, and shoots and loads as well as any other ammo, and should not be discounted as junk. People who shoot a mix of guns some with modern non corrosive ammo and others with surplus corrosive ammo should think very carefully about their gun cleaning techniques. The majority of the salts are in the initial powder residue and these are swabbed out with the first few cleaning patches which is good! The remaining salts even in a brilliantly clean and shinny bore are more than enough to rust the gun barrel  before you use the gun the next time. This brings up a critical point and that is the fact some people double dip their cleaning patches in their cleaning solvent. This double dipping transfers the salts into the solvent and then transfers the salt to your other guns creating the same problem as if you had used corrosive primers.
Even in never using corrosive primers the buildup of powder fouling in the solvent over time from double dipping will lessen the cleaning ability of the solvent and make it impossible to clean a gun completely even with you best efforts. It is like having a bunch of kids run through you kitchen floor with muddy feet and after the wash water reaches a saturation point of suspended dirt ----you do not change the wash water and continuing to scrub the floor with muddy water. You only re-applying muddy water to pick it up again and putting it back in the bucket.
First rule never dip your patch even if running a dry test patch down a gun barrel and even if the patch looks clean when you pull it out of the gun barrel. Second rule never double dip your patches. Third, forth and fifth rule never double dip your patches.
The main trouble for many of us is the fact that we can get the surplus ammo for as little as 1/4 the cost of new production ammo so for the shooter and sportsman you can shoot 4 bullets for the price of one. This brings us to removing the remaining salts. The army cleaning solvent nicknamed Mothers Milk is no longer available. And people who shoot surplus ammo have stockpiled what was available and so the gun shows have dried up as far as a supply point. And what is being sold from the military surplus is the newer solvents. In a manual I have written I spend some time explaining the corrosive nature of the mercuric primers and why it is involved in the erowiding of your gun and I also include a formula so you can make your own Mothers Milk cleaning solvent. In my other book I recognize that there may come a time when you can no longer buy what you need to make your gun work so along with the massive amount of information on providing home made arms and ammo I provide  information on making what you can not have  if your gun rights were taken away I also include a formula for making a Hoppies #9 type cleaning solvent. Freedom

Freedom of the press is only free when it assures the freedom of a nation. Freedom will soon be lost where the press will not publish the truth. A free press in this nation has no right to lie, deceive, or support any ideology against the constitution. It must stand neutral and report the facts and let the public decide the way. National Decay

Socialism was never home grown in any nation among any free people instead it is planted like weeds to choke and infiltrate good government, pervert the press, destroy good laws and deceive the weak minded. When fully blossomed it kills the resistant outside the bounds of the laws of a nation. The only way to save a nation when this begins is to make socialism a treasonable offence.Richard W Norman

Anvil Homemade

Cheapskate shop equipment is possible on a shoe string budget. In a war a anvil would be used 24-7. One of the tools that everyone wishes they had from time to time is a good anvil. Old rail road = (RXR) track, small or large gauge, street car track scraps, or even 4X4 block structural steal all make a superior anvil. The RXR anvil lower right was made by me long ago when younger. RXR track is a very hard high carbon steel. Really RXR anvils in some cases is a better anvil than you can buy because of the high carbon content in the steel. An anvil is an occasional use tool yet a powerful addition to any shop. With a chisel you can cold or hot cut metal. By tipping the RXR anvil on its side you can use the open aria to hammer bend arches. By using a flat spot you can flatten a curve. You can shape hot metal, bend right angles or straighten out a bend. The RXR track was given to me by the foreman on a RXR repair crew where I saw them working. The RXR track was deformed and a scrap cut off. I called a steel shop to get it cut at $5 a cut. 3 cuts would have given me 4 anvils. When I got there he wanted one so he said he would make the cuts for free for one. Returning home I cut off the sharp corners on the base plate with my chop saw which was practical but it also gives the anvil a finished look, and cleaned up the sharp edges with my hand grinder. For the average home shop you do not need the the tongue I made on mine which was a considerable amount of work. If you look at some of my older posts you will see me shaping metal with the anvil above in helping to making an electric 90 lb capacity lead casting pot(to see the old posts on making the melting pot click here). I made the above new anvils as Christmas present for 2012 but I could not post them before Christmas. I had some black paint and spray primer left over from another project but bought the red paint for $1.49 -- so after tax I have a little over 50 cents in each anvil. Its a proud addition to any shop. Just keep an eye out for RXR track scrap!

Mec Shotgun Press -- Free Bottles

Mec shotgun press substitute water and soda bottles

Yes the bottles on my press are good. But, if you have a press where your bottle got broken, the neck on a normal soda bottle (as well as this 1 liter water bottle) will do the trick until you can buy a new one. It is nearly the same size around as the other bottles but in the photo its positing makes it look considerably bigger. In an emergency soda and water bottles are good replacements. The shot you see is home mad by me, and I show how it is done in my e- book below. It really cuts the price of shooting shot-shells. Richard W Norman

Gun Reloading Equipment: A Buyer's Guide

Gun Reloading Equipment: A Buyer
In my book it is expressed that having good equipment is critically important as we approach these troubled tomes. There are photos on how to set up a very efficient loading station with the least expensive best loading equipment available to make a better high quality product. The finest most cost effective equipment to buy is featured. You will find many cost saving solutions to purchasing reloading equipment depending on what you want to spend. Having a stockpile of real powder and primers is critical to making the best bullet possible. The real beauty of the book is to allow you to supplement that equipment with home production if you could no longer buy powder and primers. The book has a few primary functions. First it is an emergency supply system for guns and ammo production at home. Loading without loading equipment is one of the topics with homemade powders, propellants, primers and projectiles if necessary. Bullet casting with good equipment is also covered but supplemental bullet casting is also provided for so you can make bullet molds from car parts and a led smelter from a turkey fryer. Homemade shoot making is explained and a host of other topics are covered over 553 pages of powerful information and over 450 photos and drawings. If you want to buy good reloading equipment or if you want to apply it to emergency gun and ammo production for your gun you will always be able to supply your gun with ammo. There is no other book on the market like it. American Handbook on Guns Ammo and Freedom

Gun Powder Scales With an Oil Bath

Pacific and Redding oil bath gun powder scales. Little known is the way to use some of the old reloading scales top Pacific bottom Redding. Note the two reservoirs. Originally the owner would put oil in the holes and the paddles below  would move back and forth in the oil in tell the scale came to a halt. They probably worked better then our scales do today. So just because it is old douse not mean it is junk! Some newer scales use a magnet built into the scale to accomplish the same thing.

75% Wealth Tax

Currently in France courts and statesmen want a 75% wealth tax. This is socialism at its peek! What they start saying is that the rich must pay their fair share and then move into everyone paying. What ever the equity is in your home or savings when such is repeated here in the USA the government will then own 75% of your investment. Eventually they will ask for the other 25% and "wallah" your wealth has been redistributed and the state now owns everything. It eliminates all property ownership. Isn't the redistribution of wealth wonderful! Those of us apposed to such things only hope that those seeking such things wake up before it is too late. Oh by the way currently in France it has been found that some of those in government and the courts seeking for the redistribution of wealth have out of country bank accounts---So this means that the redistribution of wealth is only for everyone else and not those law makers supporting such laws. Many of our political leaders in America are seeking for the same thing.
Petain (the french dictator under Hitler who helped overthrew the Third Republic and helped send his fellow countrymen to death camps and ordered the police to preform night raids on his nations homes) would have been proud of the modern France. It sounds like France needs another revolution, let us in the USA pray we do not!  Richard W Norman   For my book in print click my name.

Redding Powder scale Salvage and Repair

Note before we start-- This product could be produced without the copy work seen below and work just as well. It would only require a small amount of effort to model these parts in clay without the duplicate parts to work with. The powder pan is 2 1/4 in. wide and 3 in. to the spout and 3/4 in. high and the bottom should be flat so it can be set on a table. The base ballast pan is 1 1/8 inches wide and 3/8 in tall.  To make the cradle pan (Where you see the Phillips heads of the screw after forming your powder pan press it into the clay to give it a matched shape.  Some helpful principles were explained in the part of this blog on the Pacific powder scale so if you will look there it is listed only a few posts back. The repairing of the Redding however will involve some key differences. First the Pacific was complete but missing the counter balances. This Redding is missing the powder pan and the bottom pan support and counter weight and the support wire. If the home construction parts are to heavy then the scale will not work as it should. so as long as they are light the differences can be added as ballast. This brings in the main problems how to produce parts that will be strong and functional and yet light enough to not tilt the scale the wrong way. This may require a nonmetal solution and there is a lot of options available. Fiber glass might come to mind but the parts are so small that the rest of the resin and hardener would lay around unused. The glass cloth might be to thick for the job.
“Brother, brother, go find your brother” (Copying one product to make another). In an emergency using one product to copy a form or shape of another will add additional tools without the sacrifice of the original part or equipment. A liquid formed part is a simple solution to have a near copy of the needed part. Epoxies with a fiber material should do without the large investment and the leftovers of a quart of fiberglass. Casting these metal parts into a plastic is hard because they are so thin but making a single sided shape is easy with a little modeling clay. I first forced a large quantity of clay in the powder pan and pressed it in firmly to get rid of all the wrinkle lines I could (but there were still some). I rolled out some of the clay flat and then removed the clay from the powder tray which slightly deformed it. I then spent some time rubbing out any remaining wrinkles with a spoon. The part was slightly deformed but this was OK as I had the general shape and no wrinkles in the clay. Sprinkling on a little baking flower as a release agent I then pressed the powder pan back into the clay. This time I could remove the tray without having it stick and there were no wrinkles. An old paint brush could be used to remove the flower. Next I mixed the epoxy and smeared it on the clay form liberally and taking a paper napkin I made the first layer. Still having some epoxy left I put on another layer of paper napkin. This was about all that could be done within reason and allowed to harden for 24 hrs.

It was an OK job but I wished I had added another two more layers of epoxy and napkin before I had removed it from the clay but I still can do that. There were two air bubbles which will not be hard to fill. A single piece of  a light woven cloth might have been better then the napkin but as it is it is more than strong enough to do the job and the paper napkin was very responsive to form in the wet glue.
There are two less complicated parts in the base above that each could be duplicated the same way. Note there are weights in the base when you remove the screw they must be saved and replaced.
An aluminum chain link fence tie wire could be used to make the cradle wire and small chunks of steel tie wire could be cut and weighed until the scale zeros out. These pieces will be put in the new base you are producing when you are finished (for ballast). If you are gluing the base then the extra glue will overweight the scale so leave out some of the counter weights and glue on the bottom. When it is dry drill a small hole in the lower cavity just big enough to put the weight in BUT DO NOT PUT THE WEIGHTS IN. Dump them in the new powder pan and zero out the scale. When 1/10 grain underweight put them in the whole and with a toothpick use a small drop of glue to seal the hole. You can add extra smears of glue until you reach zero and you can use sandpaper to remove weight.  Your Redding scale will now work as good as if it were new. Richard W Norman

Happy April Fools Day

Well I guess you figured to turn on my site and see some useful or wise information, well not today. On a day when fooling someone is appropriate I will not do that either. But simply relate half of a  true story. Some years ago at church a fellow related this event that had happened to a young couple in their first real argument. She was about to go to work and time would not allow for them to work through things as they normally would. Wanting to feel better she slid on her favorite dress and said "ZIP ME!" Her husband yelled back "I WILL SHOW YOU ZIPPING!" and he quickly ran the zipper up and down a number of times and broke it. This did not help maters ---it was their first real fight and to top it off he had ruined her favorite dress! She fumed all day, and as luck had it as she got home all her built up frustration was to find a release. He was there ahead of her and in a most vulnerable position slid under the family car with his legs sticking out. Unaware of what was about to happen to him she bent over and said "I WILL SHOW YOU ZIPPING"  She herd his moans and was not to gentle with his groin and herd him bump and bag his head, and hands and arms  and there was not a thing he could do to defend himself. Soon there was silence. Triumphantly she walked in the house. She had a victory to be proud of!  In the kitchen there were two glasses of punch and she stood staring at them as her husband walked around the corner. She asked sheepishly "Dear who is under the car" Her husband responded "oh that is our neighbor Bill he saw I had car trouble and offered to help. She quickly explained her assault on Bill and asked her husband to help her explain. Her husband felt as bad as she did the normal apologies were exchanged that they did not have time for that morning and they returned to the garage and her husband called out "Bill are you OK?" No answer! He garbed on pants leg and his wife garbed the other and they drug Bill out from under the car unconscious. His head injuries were from him beating his head between the belly pan of the car and the concrete in tell he lost consciousness. By this time I was laughing so hard I missed the rest of the story but Bill was not seriously or permanency injured. Richard W Norman
