Bullet Movement Air Movement and a Moving Target

About 30 Miles Per Hour Wind
Today a lot of people are pretty good shots as they have access to indoor shooting ranges so even in a good sized city you do not have to drive for miles and miles to find a place to shoot. This is all well and good but the lack of a changing environment will eventually catch up with them if they do not know what to expect. Even a slight breeze will have an effect on a bullet at a few hundred yards. This should not make to much of a differences if the shooter keeps in mind the possible variations that can occur, because of the wind pushing your bullet. Muzzle loading guns are more susceptible to wind than other guns as the bullet is moving much slower some have noted as much as 18 inches difference in a 20 mile per hour wind at 100 yards. A quicker bullet from more modern made guns lesson this problem dramatically but it is still a problem that needs to be addressed. If you have spent your life shooting at indoor shooting ranges and you have a chance to go shooting outside and must drive a considerable distance to shoot watch the weather the night before and find a day when the wind will be blowing. A strip of cloth on a stick sticking (or temporarily attached to your gun barrel) nearly straight out will denote about a 30 MPH wind and by dividing up the position from the stick to the straight out position should give you a rough guess about wind speed. A more sure determiner is to tie a strip of cloth to a stick on a calm day and have someone drive the car and calls out the speed of the vehicle  while the other person watches the position of the flag on the stick. Make notes and keep it and the strip of cloth in your shooting bag.
In teaching a young man to shoot recently we did not have the wind to work with so we picked a hill where when the bullet hit you could see a puff of dirt on impact and I would describe the wind and tell him where to aim. These misses were not a wast of ammo and it gave him a feel for what to look for if wind was a factor.
In hunting (I do not hunt but was a concealed carry instructor in Texas) shooting at moving targets you must lead the target (shoot slightly ahead) so the bullet runs into the moving animal. (Do not lead a target moving in your house as they are so close). Some of you will eventually end up in the military and be taught to increase the lead depending on speed and distance of the moving target. If you are shooting from the side of a moving vehicle aim slightly behind the stationary target as your side movement will be transferred into the bullet as well. If shooting from the back of a moving vehicle with your target straight back aim straight and slightly elevate as you increase your distance. Richard W Norman

Bayonets and Arrows

A lot of effort has been expended on downgrading the arrow and the bayonet. Some few years ago the arrow was banned that could pears a bullet proof vest. There was a gentle growl at the gun shops as people were saying things like "I bet there was ZERO statistics on police men being shot with arrows"  Why would congers go to such lengths to pass such a law if there was almost no chance of arrows being used as a threat to the police. Putting the bayonet in the same ball park why has the BATF and congers feared the public ownership of the bayonet and put restrictions on them from time to time  as well, and we will probably see further restrictions on them in the future.
First the only reason to fear the bayonet and arrow is if our political leaders wanted to taker our freedoms as a nation. There would have to be a general fear that the public would use the bayonet and arrow to protect themselves otherwise why go to all the trouble to place restrictions on them.
The next point is critical so give this some thought. Hollywood is full of Post Modernists (Socialists) in radio and TV who when possible downgrade the bayonet. Shows on TV and military history programs as well as historians are saying the day of the bayonet is over. Why then would congress and the BATF go to such lengths to restrict them? Why would Hollywood go to such lengths to downplay them? Next point if the day of the Bayonet is over why does the army have bayonet training. Perhaps it would pay us to look at these supposed useless employments. Maybe its time to look at the pluses of these tools!
The bayonet and arrow offer first and foremost a way to kill in silence. Make no mistake if used in the right way they each could be as lethal as any bullet ever made. If we were invaded they should be used with the idea of stealth and surprise. Second the bayonet offers an alternative when you are out or running low on ammo. British Commander Carlton's men used the bayonet in the executions of surrendering Americans during the Revolutionary War. Another words a bayonet or arrow can offer a lethal wound with out the expenditure of any ammo. (home made arrows would be easier to make than shell casings for a gun) Bayonets are relativity cheep depending on the gun and I feel a good storage item.
Well over 30 years ago I had a chance to go on a trip with a man and his kids to Mexico to see many archaeological sites interesting to note was the fact that Mexico had guards on dams and bridges with a rifle and a good sized bayonet. Countries with small armies are reduced to such types of things for national security. One of the neat things about a bayonet is the intimidation factor.
Lastly the bayonet above is for a India 308 cal Ishapore  rifle. It is not a very well designed bayonet as it has no blood grove. A blood grove is a dip on each side of the bayonet that runs most of the length of the blade which allows the air to enter the wound as the bayonet is withdrawn otherwise the bayonet will sometimes be stuck in the flesh and be difficult or even near impossible to remove because the mussels contract around the blade. Where ever possible get a bayonet with a blood grove. In a war do not push the bayonet in up to the hilt! Do not drive a bayonet in over 6 inches as it is better to make another hole in your opponent if the first one was not lethal so the blade will not be as difficult to remove. In a war if you had to use a bayonet it is a good idea to have a bullet in the chamber so if the bayonet becomes stuck you discharge the gun and the hole will allow air to enter the aria so you can remove the bayonet, which would be extremely important for any use of a bayonet but especially important for a bayonet without a blood grove.   Richard W Norman

This man made a bow out of his skis
Bow string could be made with carpet thread, or upholstery threads, or parachute cord, etc. After calculating the desired length of the bow string, a jig could be made with two nails in a board to wrap the carpet threads on. An easy 40 pound bow to make is from a five foot length of 3/4 schedule 40 white PVC pipe and two 5/16 fiberglass reflector poles at about $2 each. On one rod cut off 12 inches and on the other rod cut off 18 inches and make a center mark on all the pieces and duct tape them together. Center this inside the white 3/4 inch schedule 40 pipe, only use the black pipe if the other is not available. Arrow point can be made out of an elongated narrow triangle of steel made like an Indian arrow point tied on a shaft for a point.
Lay out the end string notch on the pipe is simple. By using a tile cutting blade for a hacksaw it makes a notch perfect for a parachute cord bow string. This description is from the youtube site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmxn-nPNhY8

The Slowest Form of Death

Usually a gun site today I will deviate a bit. It is no mystery the slowest manner of death is good health but the slowest form of death may well be the man or woman who has no care for their fellow beings. While some die young from defect and disease others living their whole life may have died soon after they came of age who spent their whole life living a religion of self. In reality in the sands of time they never even made a dent and like so many others who have gone before helped none in need but in the land of the living are only among the walking dead. Dead to charity, integrity, honor, love, --dead to all aspects of the milk of human kindness , and when weighed in the balance they would have made no difference even if they died at birth and would never have lived at all.
In Bonham Texas Fannin county a  small group of people have made a difference in peoples lives for 20 years they have a small organization that subsisted on about $700 a month working from space loaned to them  for a few decades. The owner of the space finely sold the warehouse and they must find new space or dissolve. The interesting thing about this organization is the fact that they feed 400 families a month without government assistance. Businesses and other sources donate the food.  It would be a shame to let such a group fade away without a struggle. The help you could offer, what ever it is -- no mater how small could make a big difference. The Bonham  chamber of commerce could direct you on how to help. Thanks

Lyman Shell plate Gauge

When a rifle bullet is fired the shell casing stretches and if not trimmed it can pinch in the throat of the gun barrel and when the gun is fired the shell casing will go up the barrel with the bullet and blow up the gun  This Lyman shell case tool saves you from having to measure each shell casing with a dial caliper. The shells are quickly checked and the shell that is to big is thrown in a separate bucket so it can be trimmed.  The rest are loaded. It is the quick and easy way to check shell cases. I had hoped for years to git one of these used but no one gets rid of them so I had to finally break down and buy a new one. No I do not work for Lyman nor do I receive anything for mentioning other companies products. Using the Lee hand held shell case trimmer and buying the Lee de-burring tool combined with this Lyman tool above will save you hundreds of dollars and allow you to do what people do with expensive case prep machines. (most people are heart sick after investing in a electric prep center and find out how little they got for their money) Also in an emergency where there is no electricity the electric case prep machines become a pretty ---but expensive useless paperweight. In an emergency such a tool  as this Lyman shell plate gauge could be copied even if it were made for only one shell casing for each shell plate gauge. It would be a quick and easy way to supply a group of people in a war with a most usable easy to make low tech, but extremely effective product. Using a block of wood and a dial caliper-- sand the block in tell it is within a little under maximum shell case clearance in both directions. This would allow you to use the gauge no matter how it was turned. Clamp four pieces of flat iron around the block and spot weld. The wood block you just made could be used to create hundreds of these shell plate gauges.Check each gauge after welding with a dial caliper. Using metal stamps, stamp on caliber size, before distribution.

Military Gun Cleaning Kits

Using military gun cleaning equipment
First question of importance---What are cleaning patch sizes for military and nonmilitary rifles, pistols etc.? This is not an easy question to answer. The most critical thing is patch size and thickness to the Jag involved (Jag = cleaning rod end where the patch goes). This can vary dramatically from gun to gun even with the same or near same bore diameter. On the Chinese and Russian import guns like the AK, SKS and Mosin Nagant   the cleaning jag is tight to the inside of the barrel (seen below) and the cleaning rod is made out of steal (as are most military gun cleaning rods). This proposes a two part problem one is that the constant use of the steal cleaning rod will wear out the rifling by the muzzle and destroy the accuracy so the gun rod has a protective cap.
Communist Bloc Countries made a part of the cleaning kit with a cap with a hole in it. When the top is taken off the cleaning kit the cleaning rod is fed into the cap and it goes over the muzzle so the moving cleaning rod will rub the caps smaller hole and not wear out the end of the muzzle. Some guns have no protective cap to protect the muzzle so you must use your thumb and first finger to center the rod and keep it from rubbing the muzzle. I think the Russians use the metal cap because of the cold weather and using gloves.
Perhaps this explanation is of little consequence to some as most of us have invested in good cleaning equipment and have no plan to use the old military surplus stuff that is connected to our guns. Yet many with one gun and a low budge are stuck with using this cleaning system and do not know how to use it. Others are worried about the future and no matter whether on a hunt or in a future stress situation would prefer NOT to carry around their bulky stuff to clean their gun with. This brings us back to using the old army stuff that came with your gun.
No matter which old military gun you own having an idea of how to make the right sized patches would and could prove useful or even lifesaving. Weather we ever go to war on our own soil or not who knows? But interesting to note the military statistics on deaths from solders caring a dirty gun is huge. Little wonder they try to make such an impression in basic training on gun cleaning.  On the more sedate end of the problem losing a chance at a dear in dear season could be heart breaking so having a pocket sized cleaning kit for a non-military gun could also be critical to get the mud and slop off.
During WWII my Dad fought in Luzon, Leyte and Marti. He had a captain during the campaign in the Pacific who swore that my Dads gun was his and he was ordered to hand it over. My Dad knew his gun and stripped it and cleaned it every night and knew his serial numbers. They were in a combat situation and constantly wet in the jungles and what my Dad was handed was a rusty piece of junk. The Captain never cleaned his gun and it was rusted solid. Dad said he worked like the dickens just to get the gun apart but after hours of work he got it into some kind of workable condition --- still he was not happy with what he was caring. The next day the Japanese in a surprise fire fight shot the captain through both legs and my Dad got his gun back. Little wonder that the military spends so much time telling their men to “take care of your gun and it will take care of you”. Those cleaning utensils that are on your old relic should be something you become familiar with and find or make the right sized patch for the job. If your gun does not have the cleaning tools, now is the time to buy the parts while you can. Many times the parts are dirt cheap at gun shows, and pawn shops under $5. Looking at your old military gun as a collectible and for value it is better if it is complete. Looking at your old military gun as a lifesaving tool you might need some day makes it doubly important if it is complete.
