A voice

To the Patriots and Christians among us—Three decades ago right and wrong were very clear. Some chose wrong and society recognized it as wrong and simply turned the other way. However this group in opposition to Bible teachings, and the constitution  have been expanding and moving into positions of prominence in the press, leadership in Washington D.C., Hollywood, and our college campuses. A change for the better

We have arrived at a time where the generation gap is narrowing as never before. One college professor took an old TV series called, “Leave it to Beaver”, and copied some clips to show to his students. The professor expected the walls to shake with laughter as he showed families in settings far different than we are used to today. At the close of the video the room was silent the professor asked what the class thought. One girl said how much she would like life to be like that today and the class agreed. In essence the responses went like this one kid said she would give anything to lay in the sun in the grass in her front yard and study her homework and not fear to be accosted or shot. Another kid said, “oh that I could have dinner with my family like that,” another, “Oh to be able to take a walk in the evening without fear.” The kids went on and on. Selling good at this time of depravity to this generation may not be as much of a hard sell as we might think. True pied-pipers of the present need to play a song of the values of the past and we may well find our children willingly dancing to the music. Richard W. Norman

Praying for good politicians

It has been very apparent that the nation has been headed down a road that the vast majority of our people would not like it to go. This has been pushed in the press and in the hallowed halls of Washington D.C. and Hollywood; people seem to be in power that do the opposite of the promises made during the elections and those on the TV have no moral base. We need to remember that in spite of what these people do there is a higher power involved in the destiny of men and nations. We may think that we have little or no influence in the future course of this nation. Some men say the heavens are silent—that God does not hear or speak today. Yet there is a gentle wispier in the minds and souls of men that he is real—that we are neither forgotten, neglected nor alone. Perhaps our efforts should be a grater dependence on prayer to attract the gaze of his all watchful eye, coupled with our own feeble efforts, and an indomitable faith that if it were needed he would move the very mountains for our good.  

October 11, 2011 Houston, Texas, was in a drought. The soil of east Texas is black in nature; when wet it is like gummy clay and when dry almost like a fluff, kind of like dry peat moss. During a drought the soil shifts and moves in a contraction leaving huge cracks large enough to swallow a cow or man and at this time the soil was relentless. Homes were being destroyed from the shifting earth and plumbing pipes were cracking. At this time of extreme need one congregation in one of the outlying areas of Houston decided to do something about it, they decided to fast and pray to ask God for relief. They decided to include all of the churches in the community. Fliers were made and people went door to door and stood at malls and shops asking the community to join in the fast and prayer for rain on Oct. 11. The woman telling the story who participated in the campaign said that as the time drew near she had some normal human doubts. Some churches would not participate yet others entered the project with all they had. It did rain on the very day of the fast and drenched the area. Within the next 6 weeks they had more rain than they had for the last 6 months. As she stood at the place where she was passing out the fliers on the scheduled October 11th the day of the fast the rain was falling and people were coming up to her asking for a flier as a keep sake of the day God answered their prayers.

This nation has been going down a road different than our parents. Some have chosen to abandon the teachings of their parents, grandparents, forefathers and the founders of this nation and their God and do things against all reason of good. Somehow they are thinking that God will not see or hear. This generation however has a sprinkling of some of the finest people the world has ever known. Saved for our day! Let us live our religion whatever it may be and look heavenward to the father of us all and ask him to preserve this nation as long as there is a people planted in a foundation of Christ, that we shall have hope of a better day. Perhaps as we approach this election we should pick a day and fast and pray that we get the best of men and women as our leaders. A fast is the missing of two consecutive meals so if you ate dinner the night before you would not eat or drink until dinner the next night. You start the fast with a prayer explaining to God its purpose. You close the fast with prayer asking God to please consider your request. Fasting is best done on a day when you are not involved in strenuous work. People who are not healthy enough to fast spend the time in prayer and reading the scriptures and pondering. Rifle 308 Indian A2 Ishapore Enfield magazine repair

After years of service in the Indian army the 308 Ishapore rifle has made its debut as surplus rifle sales. The guns generally speaking are in good to fair condition and for the most part the barrels are in excellent condition. However because of years of drill practice the bolts are sometimes worn and the magazine holding release device has worn a good sized piece of the magazine holding notch away. The magazine holding lever is of hardened steel and so this constant insert and extraction of the magazine by years and years of recruits in training camps causes this notch to wear short and the mag falls lower and the gun will not pick up a bullet when it is functioned. People are buying and complaining about aftermarket magazines that do not function well. The feeder lips are soft and in time they bend and move and the gun jams. The steel is a cheap low carbon steel and is either not heat treated or the low carbon content will not allow the lips to harden if it is heat treated.

Perhaps the solution is to not replace the magazine, but to fix the old one. This Ishapore magazine was taken by me to a sheet metal shop. Sheet metal shops are used to welding thin metals and would be a first choice over a welding shop. I had him add 1/8 inch of weld which was way more than was need but necessary to make sure that I got a proper fit. The man was told that I just wanted the metal weld built up and out, and that I would handle the file works myself. The weld on the mag was first filed flat on top and then I began filing the edge where the locking lever connects with the magazine locking lip. After a few file strokes the magazine was then inserted and withdrawn a number of times. This was repeated until the locking lever caught (The mag holding lever will make a snap when the mag is filed to the right length. Do not get wild with the file. Good file work takes time! My magazine now probably has closer tolerances than when it was made. Cost of labor 5 minutes of work $12 but some shops could charge as much as $25 so get a price before you let them do the work. Some of the clips were painted Remove the paint where the weld must go before going to the welding shop or it could cost you extra labor. Remove the spring and follower so the weld will not soften the all important spring.

              Remaining weld

Finished product after about half the weld was removed here. Note the amount of metal that was left was really quite a lot. This weld can only be performed with a Tig welder. The clip now functions perfectly. It is said that a man who knows what he is doing with a Tig welder you can weld a razor blade to a boat anchor. To finish the clip burnish with steel wool and finish with a touch of Perma-Blue; or if you have a painted clip burnish with steel wool and clean with a solvent and touch up with black spray paint.    

Theory—Given that so many people are stuck with the inferior aftermarket mag they had purchased or they may have bought a gun with newer magazine already installed by the former owner or replaced the original themselves and thrown the original away. The rear lips pretty much rest against the inside of the receiver. It is not likely there is any if much adjustment that can be made there. This leaves the front feeder lips. The front lips have nothing to rest against but is fairly close to the receiver. JB Weld is said to have been used on boilers. This would make it a high heat product and a gun can heat up pretty good. Normal epoxy is only stable un till it reaches 200 degrees and failure will follow soon after. Adjust the clip so it feeds well and then remove the mag and wipe the outside of the two feeder lips with a solvent to get rid of any oil and put on a touch of JB weld. Let it dry and slide the clip in and out sanding the JB Weld until it makes good contact with the front of the receiver. It might not be pretty but theoretically it should leave you with a very functional gun for years to come. 

Spring compression--The Indian army 308 Ishapore rifle mags generally hold 5 or 10 bullets never try to overload either mag as it can over compress or brake the spring.  Richard W Norman
