Thermal couple clamps. Metal is plastic you can make any number of parts with a hammer and a vice. Mark the metal and clamp it down and wack away and you can make a right angle. If you want a arch pinch a corner  and tap it. Do it the same way each time and you can make duplicate parts. The thermal couple can not be crushed. The nuts will be finger tight with liquid Lock-nut. A tin foil cushion might also be tried. 

Note the copper vice jaws by the vice to the right were made out of 3/4 water pipe they allow me to work with parts I want to have a good finish on. To the left is a 3 ft tall rack full of varying grades of Emory cloth and sand paper.

Gun Parts Making Home Made

The process of making a replacement part deals particularly with the acquisition of a usable piece of metal. In an emergency beggars can not be choosers but some high quality steel can be harvested from varying parts of a car or truck. The front torsion bars on rear wheal drive cars and trucks is the same steal a gun barrel is made out of. If you know what you are doing  you can do a spark test on a bench grinder and the spark pattern will show what kind of steel you are working with. A  Thin orange spark stream shows nickel steel for example. Making gun parts can be as simple as using a hacksaw and varying files. Hardening  parts can be preformed in a pit fire in your back yard. Steel goes through different color changes when it comes time to finish hardening the part depending what you are trying to build-- you can even make springs, many of these things are explained in my book  so you could produce replacement parts and even a working gun at home not necessarily a single shot model either. Much of what you will see in this blog are things you can make at home involving things to improve your shooting, gun care, bullet casting tutoring and much more. Inside Pot welds

        The pot was welded on the inside and some attempt was mad to slant the weld at the corners 

A 4 inch hand grinder was used to clean up the welds. Never remove a grinding shield this is emergency production only. The grinder shield was removed and the grinder wheel was about half sized the grinder was held toward the back with one hand and carefully shaped the welds. This was one of the few times in working with out a shield  I did not consider as  dangerous as the pot protects me from a runaway grinder. To view next post click

Welding on the supporting couplings. These couplings were made to use on 1/2 inch coerce thread bolts or all thread rod. I will center the drain hole so these mounting legs will allow me the freedom to use any number of products as ingot molds. Trays of led can be slid under the pot so the led can be warming while the pot is melting led.

Aligning the parts. The top was finished in size to match the bottom (except the top lip toward the front of the pot was a few inches longer) and in normal mass production a jig would have been made which would have allowed the top and bottom to set in proper alignment. This could have have been little more than some angle iron at the corners of the jig which would have allowed for the parts to be set in and the bottom and top would be spot welded quickly before being moved for final welding. For my purposes in building one pot a small carpenters square was used to get the top and bottom aligned. A board was set on top and I leaned on it so the welding rod had no chance of sticking and moving the work. After spot welding the part was rechecked for alignment. Spot welds are easy to remove with a hand grinder if things were not right. Note the discoloration showing the internal weld was done. The temporary spot welds were on the outside. 

By flipping the pot on its back after spot welds it was checked against the flat concrete.To view next post click
