Rising to the Occasion

You do not have to be trained in a school to be a General. In the battle of Gettysburg a critical position was held and a victory won that could have cost the North the war; the General a Religions Philosophy teacher from Mane, the Battle Little Round Top. Richard W Norman

Firing Pins Homemade

Yes the teeth on this saw blade are gone but it has not lost its bite. In the future some very simple gun repair projects can be made at home like a replacement flat firing pin. This blade is made of high carbon steel and is perfect for making high quality firing pins. If national disarmament occurs you will not be able to order such critical parts so knowing how to fabricate them and hardening them may make the difference between life and death. Home made flat and round firing pin construction is explained in my book but if you do not harden them you might have just as well used soft steal. Homemade replacement spring making and emergency gun and ammo construction.  Richard W Norman  click my name for paperback or click here for e-books gun books and military manuals that could be useful in the future.

Ying and Yang warfare

Numbers do not count, Supplies do not count, only Strategy counts. Ying and Yang warfare by opposite reaction– As westerners we do not think in these terms when it comes to a fight yet it is critical to do so when you are outclassed out manned and out gunned and under supplied in every way. Consider your opponents position and strengths and supplies. If you can make your opponent amass many troops to your small number and deprive him of food, clothing and supplies he will be hungry and naked even if he has vast resources.  If you can deprive him of water he will be thirsty. If you can make him think he is in danger he will use his strength fortifying against an attack that will never come. You must persuade the enemy to defend non defensible positions. If you can make his men think they are losing they will be less likely to respond in a manner to their best interests and will be demoralized. This is only a small part of the philosophy of Sun Tzu who lived 500 AD whose tactics are studied at West Point. In a long war he beat an army out numbered 30 to 1. Alexander the Great beat armies out numbered 50 to 1. On a more practical note his philosophies are also applied in the business world. Richard W Norman

Bullet Polishing, Cleaning, Media, and Machines

At a tool company called Harbor Freight you can buy a relativity inexpensive vibrating polisher for cleaning your brass. (No I am not getting anything for mentioning them) they also sell the polishing media. Photo left above 5 lb capacity $56 and photo right above 18 lb capacity $160 ouch. The smaller one most of us can afford at $56 and meet most of our needs  The goal is to remove fine range dirt and lengthen reloading dye life. Vibrating polishers were at one time very expensive and most of us just did without. For the most part in reloading you do not need one as long as you keep the outside of the brass dusted off so as not to damage your reloading dyes from range dirt. The old burned powder residue in the cases also proposes no problem for reloading and is just ignored. This residue is also no problem for long term storage of the reloaded ammo. In an emergency you do not need to do anything special other than making sure that the outside of the shell casing is clean and that there is nothing in the shell casing. After wiping off the outside push a gun brush in and out of the case a few times and shake it upside down.
If there was ever a war and shell casings were reloaded many times then even a little range dirt would wear out loading dies in a few days to wakes  Where the shells are very dirty they need to be washed at the very least and made sure they are rinsed well. By filling a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full of brass and covering with hot water add a little electric dish washing detergent and snap on a water tight lid. Remove the wire handle and lay the bucket on its side. With two people setting across from each other using their feet push the bucket back and forth about 1/2 to 3/4 turn for five minutes. Strain off the water and add rinse water and push it back and forth for five minutes again. The brass is laid in the sun and in a few minutes it will be to hot to handle and very dry. On a cloudy or very cold day artificial heat would be needed before reloading heat to no more than 200 degrees.
Polishing media is generally of two types. One is compressed corn cob and the other is crushed wall nut shells  Bullet polishing media in a rock tumbling polisher should be stainless steel pins which would last indefinably but corn cob and wall nut shells work as well. But stainless steel pins will not work in a vibrating polisher.
In a stress situation do not throw away used up polishing media. Tie the dirty media up loosely in a old pillow case and using a five gallon can and normal dish soap wash by hand and rinse several times and pour out on a window screen to dry.
Emergency Polishing Compound-- buy auto rubbing compound and scrape out into a gallon can (#10) and fill 3/4 full of water stir in tell thoroughly mixed and let set over night pour off of the water and put the paste in a plastic container, add small amounts to the media as needed.
Note Nickle plated brass should be separated and polished for only a few minutes as it will wear out the nickel. Richard W Norman

Bullet Mold Care

Given the nature of our politicians and their considering gun control and knowing that their real goal is total disarmament it is important to mention how to care for bullet molds. First if you cast bullets you already know that a good steal bullet mold is a fair sized investment. Second you quickly realize the amount of money you save in making bullets in one good casting session will have paid for the mold. Everything after that is gravy. Even if you do not cast bullets you should consider it-least owning a relativity inexpensive mold from Lee at $26 for each gun you own. (no I am not getting anything from Lee for mentioning their products) Do not plan on the government stopping at taking semi-auto rifles (so-called assault weapons) next they will be going after the dreaded hunting rifle (so called sniper rifle) and finally after the scary hand gun. The very wise will buy a little of this and a little of that and put it away for a rainy day. If you could no longer get ammo then the ability to make your own projectiles would put you ahead of others and then the ability to load your ammo would be next. In my book I cover making ammo from your home and loading without loading equipment creating your own propellant (4 types) alternative projectiles (bullets), and home made primers as well as home made guns. But to own a bullet mold for each gun would be a wise investment.
The Lee bullet mold is made out of aluminum and needs little more care than to put it back in its box. Steel molds come from the factory coated in oil and this oil needs to be removed before  you cast. If the oil is not removed then the bullets will wrinkle. One of two ways the oil is removed is to use a non oil base solvent or boil the steal mold in water and pour the water off. To store a steal mold it must be re-coated with a coat of oil otherwise the mold will in time turn into a ball of rust. In the future it may be well to pre-prepared rather than to bu left un-prepared. After disarming other nations they made all ownership of any gun product illegal as well-- holsters reloading equipment, bullet casting equipment etc. Richard W Norman

Using a File - Draw Filing

You can tell I spent a little time working on this before the photo above. It was very jagged. Someone used this carpenters square as a guide with a jigsaw. When I got finished with the part it was flat and square .

Note the removable copper protective vice jaws were made from water pipe. Without the copper plates it would mar the square.

Draw filing is simply a way to flatten a piece of metal this can be done at an angle, or in order to get out imperfections or rough spots like above. It is the simplest form of working metal. I started with a bastard file (and yes that is the name of the file) which is a coarse cut file. Finally I used a flat finer file. The process is simple. Taking the file and starting at the farthest end of the metal. The file is placed and I push down with an even very firm pressure and slowly draw or pulling the file to the other end. Lift the file and start at the other end and repeat the process. This is the only way to flatten long pieces of metal without machinist tools. I checked this square against my own and it is really close and good enough for carpentry work. I use this process in one of my books to make a sheet metal brake. A sheet metal brake is a useful tool that is used to bend square corners on sheet metal. You will see the brake in use as I built a lead casting pot in posts on this blog last year under Lead home made casting pot (20 Posts showing the whole process of making an electric lead casting pot from scrap metal. It was necessary to draw file the bending lip on the metal brake at an angle if you would like to see the metal brake I built in action click here.).

All American Anti-Disarmament Handbook

From a gun dealer  about the “All American Anti-Disarmament Handbook” by Richard W Norman "Can I get more... Great book, this is very needed at this time. Thanks Tony
People misunderstood the name of the first book thinking it was a book on disarmament, this happened so frequently at the gun shows it was necessary to change the name to “American Handbook on Guns Ammo &Freedom” it is about 1/3 larger than its first book and it is in its third printing of the third edition which speaks volumes for what people think of it; counting its first edition it has had 4 printings.

Inflicting a Strategic Loss on an Opponent--Historical Rule of War

A strategic loss is where your losses were nonexistent to light but your opponents losses were extreme giving you a victory. If you can afflict such losses on your opponent continually you can win any war. This works in the business world as well. A good example is Dorchester Heights in Boston When Washington placed long range canons on a hill of considerable size. The British ships, fort, and housing was all within range and the British commander recognized he had lost the city and offered terms for a withdrawal and Washington did not have to fire a shot    Richard W Norman

Bullet Hammer Basics

There is several reasons to pull a bullet 1) if you think you messed up on a load for example or the phone rings while reloading or the wife called you for a "honey do", or the kids interrupt you. 2) You got some re-loads in trade and you did not know the reliability of the re-loader or the nature of the components involved. The main danger in taking in someone else's reloads is first that they could have made a careless mistake and loaded a double charge. This is just as bad if they intentionally loaded a hot round so if someone were to steal their ammo it would kill the thief if they shot it. I got some ammo in trade one time and one shell casing had a smiley face drawn on the head of one of the bullets. Needles to say I pulled all the bullets and reloaded them. Look on the boxes and bullets for any peculiar marks. So it is a good idea to pull the bullet and reload it your self unless you trust the person you got it from and look him in the eye and say "did you load this ammo or did you get it somewhere else". Another example 3) wet or oil contaminated ammo will need to be cleaned up or dried up so you can reload it .
Regardless of the reason mentioned above you need to pull the bullet so you can reuse  some of the components. It is not safe or reasonable to shoot it in your gun to unload the bullet. So you use a bullet hammer. With unknown reloaded ammo with the bullet pulled the primers are fired in your gun. If the person who loaded the ammo before used magnum primers then if you reuse them you could have a pressure spike and blow up you gun even if you use them with your own powder. The old unknown powder is a nitrogen base so it is good plant food. Your own reloads are 100% reusable as you know the products. Check the powder weight and re-assemble the bullet.
Most bullet hammers will pull the most popular bullets. It works by striking a concrete floor and the bullet is pulled with kinetic energy. This is a simple, very functional and inexpensive tool. I strike a wooden 2 X 4 to cushion the plastic and lengthen the life of the tool. Do not use on Formica, tile,  wood or synthetic flooring    Richard W Norman

What Kind of People Are We

History remembers two types of nations or peoples the good and the bad. How do we want to be remembered? Will history remember us as a people who set a standard for our children to follow? Or will our children remember us as a people of no standards. One such people will change the world and the other will destroy it. Richard W Norman

If national disarmament came than having readily concealable information in making arms, ammo, and substitute military products would be critical. Salvaging readily available surplus military products and knowing how to use these items essential in keeping the nation free. File Card

This is a file card it is used to clean out the teeth of files and makes a file more usable. A file with loaded teeth will not work well. File Cards are usually only found at a machinist tool shop. If you are new on the site you can see a homemade lead 90 pound capacity casting machine on this blog I made from scrap last year. To see its construction from junk click here. You do not have to have a lot of fancy tools to make some wonderful complicated stuff. You can even make a gun by hand. Tools like a file card are worth having. Filing is perhaps the least expensive hobby you will ever have.

Looking outside

Men with no morals as leaders will want to remake a nation into a nation of no morals. To accomplish this they will want to support laws against morality, virtue, and the standards that made this nation great. They will support the legalization of drugs, prostitution etc. To save this nation we need to remember that our laws and government are only as good as our leaders. If our leaders want to lower our standards we must remove them at the ballot box. If the political parties will not give us men and women of honor to vote for, we need to start supporting a better class of men and women even if we must look outside of the two parties. Richard W Norman

Shell Casing Sizing Wax Substitute

Only the best in style re-loader works with it! Every re-loader needs a hair care product called hair styling wax. Only your hair dresser will know for sure if your look is natural. Given I am bald I am sure the place I bought it from wondered what I was going to do with it. It doesn't matter who made the type you buy and you do not need fancy gooey lube and lube pads. Bullet sizing lube is critical to sizing for rifle dies. Each rifle bullet is lightly coated  with a very thin touch. The case is rubbed from top to near the bottom and one final touch by running you finger across the opening  and the bullet is sized. If the rifle cases are not lubed they will stick and have to be driven out of the die with the de-capping pin. One little jar like this one will last a lifetime.  This means you will only suffer the embarrassment of buying it only once. A thin coat, is a thin coat, too much and it will kill the powder and primers. Wipe off each shell casing after it is reloaded. This stuff works really well!  Richard W Norman

Gun Head Space Problems

Seeing stretch marks on shell casings or shell casings tear near the bottom of the shell casing (called the head). If you are reloading check to make sure that you are sizing the shell cases appropriately.  If the shell casing is sized to low it will create false head space problems. Guns over time have the locking lugs wear as well as the bolt flatten. When this happens the gun needs service and to have the barrel set back. It is then checked with a "Go" and "No Go" gauge by the gun smith and the gun is safe to shoot again. In an emergency (like a war but under no other circumstance)  using a gun with head space problems just neck size the shell casings that were last shot in the gun and load the gun with a lighter powder charge.  Richard W Norman
