Ammo Application in Gun Function Part 12 of 12

These 12 posts were posted when the blog was new so they were placed in order.  The 12 posts show photos and instructions on magazine function and salvage. The last post before this one #11 was on bullet shape and gun clip feeding and function so this one is a small section on gun storage. Guns are generally only worth something if they are loaded and child safety is critical. Our family rule always was that a child can see a gun anytime they want if they ask me and they can go shooting any time they want if given a small amount of time to plan for it. This works with the vast majority of kids but if you have a kid this douse not work on you already know from his or her general behavior that you will need to keep the gun locked up. When I would be cleaning a gun I would always ask the kids if they wanted to see it and eventual the response would follow "that's boring". We took them out to shoot shaving cream cans, milk jugs with collared red dye and explained very well what would happen if the gun went off and someone they loved was hurt. We found that Pandora's box was more of a temptation with forbidden fruit than available fruit. Perhaps my kids were different. The general consensus by most is to keep the gun locked up.  Perhaps that would be best! Some say keep the gun unloaded or use a trigger lock. In a critical moment their may be no time to make the necessary preparations to shoot the gun so you may be stuck with a $400 gun shaped hammer to hit the intruder with. A side note some kids have saved their parents because they knew how to use the gun and could get to it when their parents could not. A semi-auto was chosen as our self defense gun because we always left the safety on and second the chamber was left empty. Though not fool proof a small child would generally not have the body strength to calk the gun and second they would have to knock the safety off before the gun could be fired. To start at the first post on ammo application and gun function click here On the side bar you will find a wealth of information on guns, reloading bullet casting and making gun products that will save you a good chunk of change and much, much, more I hope you enjoy the sight.

Part 11 of 12 Bullet shape and your magazine in semi-auto pistols and rifles—Many people want: hollow point, semi wad cutter ammo which is almost flat with a steep sloping shoulder or some other defensive ammo etc. of a peculiar shape or nature. This is all well and good, but, ammo is no good if it will not shoot or function in your gun. You need to fire a couple of boxes of ammo through your gun to see if it works well. If it does fine if not then it is time to look for another type. Without buying a lot of expensive ammo for self-defense a good combination is to alternate in your gun between hollow point for stopping power and hard ball for deep penetration. Hollow point, Hard ball, Hollow point, Hard ball etc.
Revolvers and Speed loaders are gun specific and will be labeled as such. Outside of seeing the obvious difference between a 5 and 6 round speed loader the speed loaders are generally cataloged to brand of gun and frame type of a gun. The most difficult ammo to use is wad cutter ammo as in a stress situation even a policeman will not get all the bullets in his or her gun but many of them will fall on the ground unused. Load the first 5 or 6 bullets in the gun (depending on the revolver type and number of bullets it holds) using wad cutters. The speed loaders should be loaded with a round nosed lead bullets. This will offer you the first shots as a very good bullet followed by the bullets of the speed loader where the lead round nose will deform and bounce on impact. Ammo Application in Gun Function Part 10 of 12

Part 10 Magazine springs—A gun should never be left permanently loaded especially semi auto pistols. The reason being is the spring begins to compress and the gun will not feed as well. For this same reason a gun should never be left in the cocked position when placed in storage as the firing pin spring will lose its tension. On guns where you want it for self-defense it is best to have more than one magazine. You also need an event to help you remember to unload a mag and let it rest. I was taught this example. Each month as you go to the store to buy eggs, this is about 30 days for most families. As you go to the refrigerator to put the eggs away stop and go switch magazines. One magazine is empty and the other is full. Take the full ammo mag out of the gun empty the bullets and load the empty mag and put it in the gun. And let the other mag rest. This only takes a few moments your food will not spoil and your gun will be more functional for years to come. If you decide not to do this then you have several choices. First own extra mags and keep them unloaded buy an extra mag spring (or springs) if it is available for storage. The gun should be shot every six months and as soon as it shows signs of being unreliable switch the spring or rotate out the clip. The second choice is to only load the gun with a few bullets. The average fire fight is only 2.5 rounds. Are you willing to bet your life on the averages? End of part 10 of 12 to see the next post click here.

Part 9 Steel magazines—It would pay to describe correct production of a magazine so you can be aware of poor construction. The magazine body is first produced out of a good quality high carbon steel and then the jaws are shaped to the proper position. The body is then heat treated which makes it harder and after cooling depending on the method used it is then lightly heated to relieve stress in the steel. The lips are again checked by quality control and the mag is then blued and assembled with good parts and sold.
Poor quality magazines are made of shoddy, soft, low carbon steel and many times receive no heat treatment or if they are heat treated the steel has so little carbon the lips will not hold their position. Parts are run through as cookie cutter assembly line and the clip only receive a superficial inspection during construction of the multiple parts if it is inspected at all. The clip is assembled with as few spot welds as possible to hold the mag together and has a poorly constructed follower. There is little or no quality control and some magazines are even warped and sill reaches the consumer in an unusable condition. In some cases the spring is poorly heat treated and it too may have problems eventually. The follower that pushes the bullets are mostly cast plastic and many times misshaped and have hollow spots in the cast plastic and should have been rejected during assembly but were not.
To choose a company to buy an ammo mag from, go on the internet and look for reviews that give complaints, do your homework. The Ishapore replacement mag is a good example without naming a company people are complaining that the feeder lips soon deform because of the soft steel and the gun is not functional. The Ishapore is a very fine gun but because of the years of parade and drill practice the clip was removed so many times that the holding notch wears off the magazine somewhat and the clip falls slightly lower and will not pick up a bullet when the gun bolt is functioned. This notch needs to be lengthened. An epoxy glue is a good temporary fix and probably more than sufficient for the casual shooter. If the gun works the glue will allow you to calculate for the weld if you want it fixed permanently. This weld must be performed with a Tig welder by a professional.  A good welding shop can do that for about $25. Take the mag apart so the weld will not soften the spring. Unrelated to the mag in the Ishapore is bolt ware where the bolt was functioned so many times that it falls down in the rear position and on the forward stroke misses the bullet. In this case you must lift the bolt before the forward stroke in order to strip a bullet from the mag and chamber a bullet.
Permanent box magazines—These Fixed box magazines are made as part of the gun and you cannot remove them unless the gun is taken apart. These guns can be loaded one bullet at a time like a hunting rifle. Which makes them no better than a hunting rifle. However if you get the stripper clips for the gun even a bolt action rifle is suddenly made more responsive.
A clip or stripper clip is a marvel and is a marriage between a device and a gun that makes a gun more functional. No matter which surplus military gun you own, you will never appreciate the original function of your gun without them. You will appreciate how the gun worked originally and battlefield response of the weapon you own. For target shooting, loading is simplified—even owning a few stripper clips allows one person to load a clip while the other shoots. Many people want a matching set of stripper clips to their store of ammo.End of part 9 of 12 To see the next post click here

Part 8 Some people say the down side of the SKS is the fact that it does not have a detachable magazine. On the AK you must take an empty mag and use an adaptor and then a stripper clip. Small parts like the AK stripper clip adapter get lost in a fire fight so you better have a few extras in case you drop one. On the SKS the stripper clip fits in the gun no extra parts. People buy the aftermarket 20 and 30 round mag’s for the SKS which function reasonably well but the mags are not built with the needed attention and quality control for a military weapon. Many of the aftermarket steel mags do not have enough spot welds and can separate.
This SKS mag is connected by only two spot welds on each side; there is room for at least 3 more spot welds in this most critical location. In a stress situation a good bump and this mag is toast. For sporting activates such a clip would be fine but in an emergency would you bet your life on it

The SKS should be left alone for best results as replacement stocks are generally designed to only accept the stock makers magazines. Most of these mags are also made of plastic. Some of the mags will break if the bolt is not open when you try to remove the mag. Some replacement stocks will not accept the original factory mag so the mag jams the bolt open and the mag rattles around causing ammo jams as well. Some replacement stocks will not function with any mag except the one designed by the stock maker. Finally the plastic mags ware out. The plastic lips get thin and the lips eventually brake.  Some people will sell or throw away the old wood stock and find out too late that the gun is no longer reliable and will offer an even trade of their expensive plastic stock for an original wood stock. The SKS works best as it was designed! If you want to see a lot of different plastic stocks for the SKS go to a number of pawn shops and those SKS’s are there many times because they do not work well as they were adapted to a very nice looking poorly designed plastic stock. The best mags for the SKS are the 20 round fixed box mags shipped into the country some number of years ago. Most were made in China for the SKS during the war in Vietnam and they use two 10 round stripper clips. People who have them do not sell them and no more have been imported or made for import which is a shame. End part 8 of 12 To see the next post click here.

Part 7 clips continued  The 8MM Mauser any old cloth will do
The 8MM Mauser uses a different stripper clip but the same webbing seen part 6 will work.

Surplus 8MM Mauser ammo in a bandolier. Though the buttons can be unbuttoned they were most probably ripped off so it could be used quickly. The US bandolier has a connected strap to sling over your shoulder not to be tied on as this one. The US model had no buttons but was designed with a fold over that allows you to pull the clip out. Simple Yes! But a most effective, inexpensive, disposable ammo delivery system. Such items could be homemade and provide a good storage system for a rainy day.
AR15
No time will be spent here on this gun but the mags can be reloaded with a stripper clip arrangement as well. The ammo pouches and other stuff are readily available as military surplus unlike the guns mentioned above where you will have to hunt for the stripper clips.

AK 47 and SKS

   Loaded SKS
The SKS above with a fixed box magazine has its own speed loader built in and with a little practice you can load 10 bullets like lightning. It has a distinctive “Zip” sound when it is done correctly. There is an adapter which allows you to load AK47 magazine with this same stripper clip. As with any gun the AK is useless if you load the ammo in the empty mag one bullet at a time. Buy a devise that allows you to have two mags side by side, one is upside down this will allow you to have a loaded gun and you can flip the gun over and jam in two or three stripper clips in the empty mag (though not pretty duct tape will work). In a day of trouble whether you have an AK or SKS the stripper clip makes a gun into a true offensive weapon, functioning unrestrained from the fetters of single bullet loading.

No matter which military gun you own there is generally a stripper clip and or a speed loader available.
The SKS was placed on the ban list by the BATF except the curio and relic version the Yugo SKS with the grenade launcher attachment. Everyone is always talking about how good the AK 47 is but the SKS shoots more accurately and will offer less barrel lift with repeated or back to back discharges and has no flex in the receiver as the AK pressed metal receiver does when it is fired. The SKS is also said to offer 100 to 150 extra feet of muzzle velocity for each additional inch of barrel length over the AK47. Things are banned not because they are inferior but because they are better. End of part 7 of 12 to see the next post click here

Part 6 A few examples of crossing webing ---1903 Springfield in caliber 30/06 and Indian A2 Ishapore Enfield in caliber 308, and the American Enfield in 30/06 use the same stripper clip so they can use the same webbing.
The above ammo pouch is a WWII collectible. It holds a canteen and is worn around the waste. The aftermarket new production models are about $25. The ammo represented above from left to right. 7.62 X 54 Mosin Nagant clip, 8MM Mauser, 30/06, and 308. This webbing is very desirable in new production products among shooters and the investment is relatively small.
The 1903 Springfield used a waist belt seen above; the same ammo pouch was used in two world wars. The pouch will hold two 5 round clips in each pocket. The waist belt has 10 separate pouch on the webbing waist band as described above with 2 clips in each pouch or 10 pockets  times 2 stripper clips  times 5 bullets each = 100 bullets. This means you would need at least a minimum of 20 stripper clips. This gun also used a canvas bandolier that was disposable and had a strap that slung over the shoulder this allowed a soldier to carry a lot more ammo and these bandoliers can be made out of inexpensive cloth. Any clip fed gun can use a bandolier to increase a soldier’s firepower in an emergency and is for our purpose simply a good way to store your ammo making it very usable if there ever was a time of trouble. In any case if you cannot afford the webbing you can produce the bandoliers.
The American Enfield
This gun also uses the 30/06 cartridge and the same webbing and stripper clip.
Indian A2 Ishapore Enfield
This gun uses the 308 NATO cartridges and the same webbing and stripper clip. This gun is perhaps the most misunderstood. The A2 was designed from the factory to shoot the 308 NATO cartridges. But the rumor is that the guns were re-chambered from surplus 303 British Enfield’s. Continuing with the rumor—since it was a rechambered 303 British Enfield the 308 bullet rattles down the oversized 313 barrel. The metal is too soft for the higher pressure 308 ammo and the gun can fail. (Some amateur gunsmiths may have rechambered some 303 to 308 look at the metal band behind the bolt and it should read A2.) The fact is the American over the counter cartridge bought at the store has a chamber pressure 20,000 pounds higher than the 308 NATO cartridges that the military uses. This gun is perfectly fine shooting military surplus 308 ammo or reloaded ammo at NATO chamber pressure and is a superior cast bullet gun. You should never use over the counter 308 ammo in this gun. The gun has a few other small correctible clip problems explained later in how to choose a company to buy a clip from.
The M1 Garand
The clips for the M1 Garand holds 8 bullets the webbing for this gun was a holdover from WWI from the guns mentioned above and has 10 pouches that holds 10 clips so 10 X 8=80 bullets. You would need the webbing and at least 10 clips. Given that this gun uses a clip that is an integral part of the function of the gun most people will want as many clips as they can get to match their ammo storage. I stopped by a gun shop and these clips are also about $1 each but they can be as high as 10 for $24. In WWII this gun was said to be able to kill the enemy in the Black Forest in Germany when they were standing behind trees up to three feet thick with our men using armor piercing ammo which is not sold or available to the public anymore. None the less the hard ball copper jacketed 30/06 ammo has devastating penetration ability no matter which gun it is used in. End of part 6 of 12 To see the next post click here

Ammo Application in Gun Function Part 5 of 12

Part 5 Cross dressing your gun--Crossing webbing to create a useful ammo supply systems for your gun—Outside of having a few stripper clips to create a historical effect in your target shooting. If your bolt action gun is your principle weapon it is obvious that you would want it as functional as possible. By now you will probably realize that a stripper clip is an essential part of the equation not just a toy. With this in mind using different supply systems for your gun may not be historically correct but instead of having 30 bullets you will have a battle compliment of ammo to work with. The very neat thing about crossing webbing is the fact that the 5 round stripper clip works perfectly fine in most surplus webbing. We will cover a few examples below but on the overall you should be able to use these supply systems for just about any bolt action military rifle you may own including the Mosin Nagant.

Above are about 100 rounds of 308 ammo on stripper clips. The army surplus pouch was a $1 at a swap meet. The front smaller pouch is useful to hold the empty stripper clips I never drop those. The brass is picked up after shooting and reloaded. This pouch or something very simple like it could be made out of the pants leg from some old blue jeans and some Velcro, this army surplus pouch above is my favorite. Part 4 Home made clip for the Mosin Nagant

Making a junk clip out of tin cans requires tin snips and a special metal bending pliers for the sharp edges. The can is cut to size and pounded with a hammer to straighten it out a little (it will not become completely flat).

The special pliers are used to make the bends on the outside edge and it is then folded over.

A special paper template is made to allow for mass production.

After the first bend it is checked against a known factory clip for size. And the next bend is made. Below is a completed clip. This method of loading is the only one that will work with a tin can clip. I would not want to stake my life on this clip. Part 3 The Russian Mosin Nagant rifle is an example of a gun that uses a stripper clip that is not readily available but you can find them for about $1 each. This make the old gun a pleasure to shoot as it can function as it was designed to. The clips are reusable put the empty clip in your pocket so as not to lose it. There are two ways to load the Mosin Nagant with a stripper clip. One is to place your thumb as far back as possible and push down. The other way is to put the clip in position and grab the front of the top bullet and slide your thumb back slightly lift the front of the top bullet and push down with your thumb. This creates a small lever so to speak and allows you to push in the bullets easier. I made some homemade stripper clips out of a tin can and they only work with the second method mentioned above and were not very reliable. The tin can deformed when using thumb pressure alone. Using the leverage method it worked but was marginal in its success and would cause the tin can clip to jam in the gun on occasion. Real stripper clips would be better! A full complement of clips for this rifle is 6 clips so at $1 each you will not have much of an investment. The webbing for this gun-- webbing is the ammo pouch for this explanation but webbing would include backpacks, canteen holders, gun sling or generally anything used to hold a soldiers gear. For our explanation the word webbing will be limited to the ammo pouch. The Mosin Nagant pouch only holds six clips but having a few extras would be better for storage. You will readily see why the Russian soldier had so few bullets. If you were going to put a people under control of an oppressive government then you would not have a soldier carry to much ammo. If he were hit on the head the opposition would now have a complete battle compliment of ammo to work with. Some army’s battle compliment was as many as 100 bullets depending on the nation and army you are looking at. The Russians could not have that so they made an extremely small ammo pouch which only holds 30 bullets. Owning this Russian ammo pouch with your gun you would want the stripper clips to complete the set, in this way it is a piece of history as well as useful at target practice or at home if you do not have a handgun.

The above Mosin Nagant pouch will go on your belt and is very functional it holds 30 bullets. End of part 3 of 12 to see the next post click here

Part 2 Clips
The M1 Garand and M95 Steyr are the exception to the term clips a clip is generally a short reference to the word stripper clip. The M1 Garand has a clip that is an integral part of the gun. The clip holds 8 rounds of ammo three more bullets than our WWII opponents German 8MM Mauser, or type 99-- 7.7  Japanese Arisaka, or the Garand eight rounds to the six rounds Italian Carcano, giving the Garand  a tremendous advantage for its time on the battlefield. When the last bullet is fired out of the Garand rifle the clip pops out from the top. The Steyr drops the clip out from the bottom.   Except the two exclusions the M1 Garand and the M95 Steyr (generally speaking --there may be a few rarer guns in this category) a stripper clip is not an integral part of the internal working of the majority of military guns. This does not mean that a stripper clip is not important to a gun or gun owner however.
Stripper clips make all the difference in the world in combat. Take your normal bolt action hunting rifle for example. These guns must be loaded one bullet at a time which is ok for hunting purposes. Most military bolt action guns of a newer make (when we say newer we mean WWI& WWII bolt action guns) have a specially designed notch which allows them to use a stripper clip. It pays to own a few stripper clips for whatever rifle you own as it is the difference allowing you to load 5 or 10 bullets in your military rifle as fast as most people load one bullet in a hunting rifle. This statement is made without the least exaggeration.

Surplus military clips from a gun show above are a hodgepodge of different manufactured clips of the same design. The bullet is used to release the spring, the spring is slid out and then the rust and dirt is attacked with steel wool and oil then wiped clean and reassembled.

No they are not perfect but they are clean and just as functional as new clips at a fraction of the price. I do not sell mags or clips and have no associations with people who do, nor was I paid to write this article.  But a good source for the above clips for your gun from a new manufacture are the M 14 clips for 308 caliber sold by K and K Surplus at 10 clips for $5 at the time of this printing. Item #3202 www.kandksurplus.com (These should work in the guns we are describing and look like the clips above but as mentioned you would be getting new clips).  Some people are attempting to sell one rusty stripper clip for $5 each on the internet. K and K also had 50 packs of caliber 223 strippers for $8 item #WA-223-50-STR and AK47 loaders as well. K and K is not the cheapest on everything. From other sources SKS strippers are $7.50 for 20 on Amazon with no shipping charges and the 7.62X54 strippers are about 45% cheaper from other sources too at the time of this printing so I would not go to  K and K for those.
