Perfect Bound Book Repair

Gun manuals and Machinist manuals will be the most valuable books of the future and many libraries are not carrying them so to get your hands on a beaten up one is a real find. Book binding is of two types one is perfect bound which is where a pile of pages are stacked together and smeared with glue like this book was made and the other is folded pages stitched together. The second is more difficult to repair but the perfect bound is fixable by anyone.

Shell Cases Water Resistant

In my first edition of the 2008 printing All American Anti- Disarmament hand book I covered water resistant shell casings. In 2011 the government considers them as terrorist property but given I covered them before this law was past in 2011 and some poor soul  might go hunting and get wet it would be useful to know a simple way to produce a few for a hunt. It is not difficult! All you need is some fingernail polish and you are in business. Hold the bullet in your left hand between your thumb and forefinger hold the polish brush in your right hand and rest your wrists together and role the shell casing against the brush and rotate the bullet with your thumb and forefinger. It requires no artistic ability! No steady hand! And is not to time consuming.  

The primer is the easiest part sober on the fingernail polish and wipe on a paper towel. This paper towel was saved from the experimentation done in pre-2008 I found that the more polish that was wiped on the towel the more usable the towel became. Left factory right  fingernail  polish. Tobacco Smoke in a Book

 Getting out the smell of tobacco. The need to have knowledge at our fingertips is critical in the future and could well be the determining factor of the success of this nation in a time of trouble. Loading manuals, machinist books, and gun books are critical pieces of knowledge that we may be hard pressed for in the future. This brings in the reality that such valuable pieces of information may need to be available in a less than desirable condition. 

Tobacco Smoke seems to plague some of us that do not smoke. Not to infringe on another man’s right to smoke but sometimes our paths cross in the strangest of places. Some of the most desirable books to own are old loading manuals and some of these were owned by former smokers. Some of us have wanted to get our hand on some of these old books for some time. This brings up some interesting problems as some pages are inundated with the smell of tobacco smoke many times. Unlike a novel where the person reads it once. A loading manual is studied, perused over, and looked at when you have a new idea. In looking on the web, people have suggested putting the book on a rack over baking soda. In looking at the problem part of the difficulty of the smell is air exchange and a closed book has no air exchange. The ideal thing to do would be to leave each page open for several weeks which is impractical. I planned a 3 step approach. 1) Get some air to each page. This was done by cutting up junk mail sales fliers, that the wife would through away anyway, about 1 inch wide. Leave the circular closed and cut it up in strips. Now open the strip to the center page and make your accordion folds and you will do a whole bunch at one time. 2) Lace the folded strips between each page from one end of the book to the other and set the book on end and let it set for about a month. This should do as much as possible by normal air flow. 3) After the month of air exchange the book is left in this position place baking soda in a cardboard box and a cookie rack wire mesh over the baking soda (I used some boards from an old pallet as it was free). Baking soda absorbs the worst of smells. 4) After another week (mine were left for three weeks) remove the book and the baking soda is removed and put in a cap full of cheap men’s cologne under the rack and put the book back in and close the box again and leave it set for a few days. I will use a men's spray colon as I had some available.  

Warning –Nearly all things are leaning toward the acid or base side of their PH.  Good books are generally made from acid free paper or they are PH balanced. The baking soda is a base and must not come in contact with the pages or your book will deteriorate. Richard W Norman

Cast Bullet Hardening

My bullet casting is usually one or two day every  year or two. In my video  on this blog you will see how so many bullets are made in such a short time. Yes I make more than one caliber!

Bullet casting should not be mixed in with quenching bullets as you will not get anything done. You must segregate the work. If you do quench while casting then you have something else to do aside from bullet casting which will slow down your work and bullet production will be a slow and laborious process. Given that people do not understand the rudiments of bullet casting  I will start by placing into order a video seminar I created a little over a year ago posted on the internet. People posting some instructions on the internet may well only be casting a few bullets but my video series will turn you into an expert without having to read a bunch of books and you will see how war time production could be a real mass production reality. But in this time of peace it has real hobby implications! 

  A hot bullet made from normal automotive tire wheal weights dropped in water will harden it dramatically without adding alloy. This means that you can have a very hard respectable rifle or pistol bullet without having to order or spend big bucks on alloy and shipping. The photos above and below with this brief explanation should be all you need to do the work of hardening your bullets. First a thrift store is the place to buy a used toaster oven (Plug it in to make sure it works before you buy it). It is best if it goes at least to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. This toaster oven was $4 but I have seen them as high as $7 used and as low as $3. Do not buy a new one. The pan I bought was also used and cost 25 cents. The handles were bent down so the pan would fit in the tester oven.

   This is an example-- This bullet mold will work in 313 (303) calibers as well as 308 (30) caliber.  For this example in using this as a 30 caliber bullet, after casting and grading your bullets this bullet is dry sized in 309 diameter in a bullet sizing die. The bullets are placed in a pan only a few bullets deep and heated at 450 to 500 degrees for a minimum of 15 minutes some prefer 30 minutes. Quench in water! (After drying off the water if you are using Lee liquid lube then all that is needed is to cover them in liquid lube and let them dry. I use a Slurpee cup squirt on the Lee lube and shake when totally covered dump on wax paper to dry. The Lee bullet sizing die is a simple round hole of the right diameter with a push rod that will allow you to dry size your bullets.  It fits on a loading press. It is a relativity inexpensive device, much cheaper than a wax sizing die machine. I eventually got a wax sizing machine for $15 at a gun show (a miracle buy) so I can use either.) When using a wax sizer then you will want to apply the wax with a 310 die if available. The point is not to disturb the outside of the bullet after it is hardened- this bullet is now very hard and usable after applying the lubricant. In my book I cover making emergency molds, 4 or 5  powder substitutes, and emergency  non led bullets and substitute primers.
