Part 10 Magazine springs—A gun should never be
left permanently loaded especially semi auto pistols. The reason being is the
spring begins to compress and the gun will not feed as well. For this same
reason a gun should never be left in the cocked position when placed in storage
as the firing pin spring will lose its tension. On guns where you want it for
self-defense it is best to have more than one magazine. You also need an event
to help you remember to unload a mag and let it rest. I was taught this
example. Each month as you go to the store to buy eggs, this is about 30 days
for most families. As you go to the refrigerator to put the eggs away stop and
go switch magazines. One magazine is empty and the other is full. Take the full
ammo mag out of the gun empty the bullets and load the empty mag and put it in
the gun. And let the other mag rest. This only takes a few moments your food
will not spoil and your gun will be more functional for years to come. If you
decide not to do this then you have several choices. First own extra mags and
keep them unloaded buy an extra mag spring (or springs) if it is available for
storage. The gun should be shot every six months and as soon as it shows signs
of being unreliable switch the spring or rotate out the clip. The second choice
is to only load the gun with a few bullets. The average fire fight is only 2.5
rounds. Are you willing to bet your life on the averages? End of part 10 of 12 to see the next post click here.
