Understanding Gun Chamber Pressure

Some people who are new at reloading will load maximum loads from their loading manuals creating high chamber pressures. Some others will cut loading data below suggested loads. The differences is sometimes surprisingly nonexistent, in other words with some powders both maximum loads and loads below minimum suggested powder charge will cause a high chamber pressure. It is critical to know which powders will allow for a cut in powder charge and the manufacturer publishes that information. Getting this information and putting it with your loading data would be best done now before restrictions may make reloading information unavailable The only way to make sure that a powder can be under cut and by how much is with what was written by the powder company other wise do not cut below loading manual lowest starting load and never load maximum loads with out working up to it. The goal is to have a accurate load at varying places on the shooting ranges using the military sights on your gun. When you get that you are done. Looking at the photos above you can tell if you reloads are shooting the right pressure. Note the rounded corners on your un-shot primer to the right now note the rounded corners on the primer on the left. This primer is showing normal pressure.  If you have a primer that is smashed flat with square corners you are approaching a dangerous load. Make the appropriate adjustments. Also look for stretch marks on the shell casing near the bottom. This can also indicate head space problems, or perhaps a high chamber pressure. Richard W Norman
